Best Movies of 2017?

I was asked to start this thread since I can't think of many movies from this year that actually stuck with me. Looking back, it feels like one of the weaker years for cinema in this millennium.

Some of the hits for me this year include La La Land (technically 2016), Alien: Covenant, The Big Sick, Get Out, and Coco.

For pure entertainment, I’d also toss in It, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Happy Death Day, and Better Watch Out, 10 Cloverfield Lane.

As for things interesting enough to catch my eye, there's The Meyerowitz Stories, Okja, and War for the Planet of the Apes (though that last one was a bit of a letdown—definitely the weakest entry in the series for me).

It doesn't look too bleak on paper, but when I weigh the hits against all the blockbusters I watched just because of the hype,
versus the stuff I turned off halfway through because it just wasn't hitting, the whole year felt pretty lackluster. That includes movies like Wonder Woman, Justice League, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, BPM, First They Killed My Father, Atomic Blonde, Ghost in the Shell, and plenty more...

How does your year look?

If I had to pick a film of the year, it’d be Loveless—maybe just a hair ahead of Bad Genius. The rest worth checking out? Definitely Wind River, Good Time, What Happened to Monday, and Last Flag Flying.

As far as the high-quality stuff goes, I’ve only actually sat through Loveless and Shot Caller. Honestly, it's tough for me to pin down which one hits harder... though neither of them truly blew my mind...

It was a pretty rough year for movies, though there were still some gems in there. I haven't even managed to get through all of them yet.

That’s just a quick list from memory, so I'm definitely leaving some out.

As for the disappointments, there weren't actually many. Most were decent enough, but the ones that really let me down were: Kong: Skull Island, Alien: Covenant, and Ghost in the Shell.

And honestly, there were plenty of others who let me down too...

People keep raving about Super Dark Times, but honestly? I thought it was pretty terrible.

The Book of Henry seemed like a winner based on the description, and I actually enjoyed how it started. But man, that second half? Thanks to the script, it was easily one of the most epic train wrecks I’ve ever seen in a movie.

I know I’m going to ruffle some feathers here, and I've definitely gotten into a few debates about this, but I just didn't click with Baby Driver or Logan either.

I'm a huge Christopher Nolan fan, so I definitely went into Dunkirk with much higher expectations. It’s a solid movie, don't get me wrong, but I think something like Hacksaw Ridge—which was a much more well-known war film from last year—is just on a completely different level.

I'm still waiting to catch Loveless, The Square, and Ferdinand before I dive into the suggestions on this thread.

I have to say it one more time: my favorite movie of the year is the animated one—Coco. 😁 It isn't perfect if you're looking for flawless logic in the plot, but as a whole, it works almost perfectly.

I feel the same way.

As it stands, Call Me by Your Name feels like the best film of the year, though I’d probably also highlight the new Blade Runner 2049, The Florida Project, Get Out, and Dunkirk.

I honestly thought last year was the absolute bottom of the barrel, but this one takes the cake—it’s even worse. Here are a few notable offenders:

Honestly, I think we haven't even hit the good stuff yet. I'm dying to see My Friend Dahmer, but since Kuso and May Dardel don't even have an American release yet, they're on hold. Then there's The Florida Project—can't wait—and Mother... I want to catch those at just the right moment. When that happens? Who knows.

Honestly, there's been way more letdowns than wins this year, so picking out any standout titles is a struggle. Plus, Oscar season hasn't even kicked off yet... 😬

If I really had to pick a few favorites, I'd definitely go with Logan, Dunkirk, and Blade Runner.

I mean, there were some smaller releases that technically count as last year's stuff since they showed up early this year, but they wouldn't be much more than just "honorable mentions" anyway...

I've got a few more titles on my watchlist, but I doubt any of them can top Blade Runner 2049.

Wind River was fine, but honestly, I don't know what I was expecting given all the hype...

Alien: Covenant was a disappointment, and Get Out was so bad it’s beyond just being a letdown.
