Rocketman (2019)

It’s kind of strange, because when I was watching the trailers, it didn't really feel like a musical at all. 🙂

Anyway, I actually really enjoyed the movie. Those two hours just flew by—it was engaging, colorful... I loved that they went with a fantasy vibe instead of just making it a straight documentary about his career. 👍

I wasn't really feeling it. I liked Bohemian Rhapsody way better.

First there was Straight Outta Compton, then last year we got Bohemian Rhapsody, and now it’s The Dirt... Is the musical biopic becoming the new big trend in Hollywood?

It feels like musical biopics have become this huge, recurring trend lately. We’ve seen some smaller, less hyped ones pop up over the last few years—think movies like *Get On Up* or *I Saw the Light*—but this isn't exactly a new phenomenon. It’s not just about the big heavy hitters like *Ray* or *Walk the Line*. If you look back, we had the Buddy Holly story in the 70s, then moved into stuff like *Coal Miner's Daughter*, *La Bamba*, and *Great Balls of Fire* during the 80s. Then the 90s gave us those films about The Doors and Tina Turner...

Yeah... there was some stuff about Tupac Shakur too, right?
And you totally missed Sid & Nancy from the 80s era. 🙂

Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if we see a massive wave of biopics coming, just like how it happened with superheroes (even though they were around way before the X-Men kicked off that whole era in 2000)... We've got the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Prince, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, KISS, Van Halen, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Ramones, Joy Division, The Clash, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Metallica, and Iron Maiden... So many legends still have untold stories waiting for the big screen. 🙂

Joy Division actually has—and it's an amazing film.

There’s one coming up about David Bowie, then there's Elvis—with Tom Hanks playing the manager—plus Lennon and Yoko, and I just read about one on Boy George too. Honestly, at this rate, we're probably going to see more musical genre biopics in the next few years than we've seen in the entire last 15 or 20 years combined.

I'm with you on preferring Bohemian Rhapsody, though this one wasn't half bad either, especially since I wasn't expecting a musical...

The movie about Judy Garland is coming out soon

It turned out to be a really good, fun movie. Honestly, the only thing that bugged me was the kids playing young Elton John—their singing voices were just painful to listen to. But hey, it’s over quick enough. 🙂

Oh, and if you dug Rocketman or Bohemian Rhapsody, you should definitely check out Velvet Goldmine. It's basically a stylized biopic about David Bowie and the whole 70s glam rock scene, with some light fantasy vibes mixed in. Plus, you get Christian Bale, Ewan McGregor, and Rhys-Meyers. 😁

It caught me off guard that it’s essentially a musical, but I breezed right past that—it’s a fantastic film 👍. The casting for the lead is spot on, and the costume design and soundtrack (obviously) are top-tier 😬.

If we're putting this up against Bohemian Rhapsody, I actually prefer this one; the character arcs and relationship dynamics actually make sense—for instance, 😁.
