There are at least two, maybe even more, specialized clinics in the States. One is located out near a small town in New Jersey, and the other is where I stayed, up near Palm Springs. To be honest, the setup in Palm Springs works pretty well, though you might not get every single thing promised in the brochure. I guess the whole two-week weight loss retreat costs somewhere around $1.75, though prices have probably dropped since then. That covers consultations with a doctor and a psychologist, a specific diet, scheduled gym sessions, and unlimited access to a really nice pool. On top of that, you can use their thermal baths, plus you get a few massages and lymphatic drainage sessions during those two weeks. If you actually stick to the plan, you could lose anywhere from 15 to 22 pounds, depending on the person. They even include Xenical, those weight loss pills, in the price. The rooms are a bit uncomfortable, I suppose, and if you want any kind of social life, it’s probably best to have a car so you can drive around and visit places ranging from Napa Valley to Santa Barbara.
