My husband was over at a specialist's office in New York City yesterday—he’s dealing with a health issue that'll likely require surgery—and he was just there for his first consultation. He brought along his referral, but once he finally got some time with the doctor, he was told that with that specific paperwork... well, he can basically do whatever he wants...😲
So, sure—the doctor runs a private practice on the side, but when you're seeing him at the hospital during his shift, he still has to accept the referral... right? Or am I missing something...
It’s probably about time she makes it clear to her husband—that he’s going to have to cover the cost of the surgery too...
He hasn't actually asked for any payment yet—but still...
I called around to a few other hospitals across the US—everyone keeps pointing me toward that one specific facility in New York City...
It’s enough to drive you crazy...
So... are we looking at health insurance and supplemental coverage then...?
What should we do... any ideas? 😢
Under the old Health Care Act, doctors were actually allowed to run their own private practices at the hospital after their regular shifts ended... There was a lot of debate about whether that was ethical—people were really pushing to have that clause removed. I’m not entirely sure if they actually did it... I haven't had a chance to sit down and read through the new Health Care Act that went into effect on January 1st. Your best bet is probably just checking in with the Department of Health and Human Services or CMS—you should ask if doctors are still allowed to run private practices out of their hospital affiliations, or if those rules changed in the new law...
