I don't really get why anyone would claim the Alka is purely Middle Eastern, though... I mean, ring tossing contests are way older than that specific tradition, and if you look at its roots, it actually traces back to those medieval knightly tournaments you see all over Europe. Maybe it's because of certain cultural influences? If we go by that logic, then America actually has a much more Americanized vibe than anything Central European or Mediterranean. Besides, you can find "Middle Eastern" influences anywhere you look... even in what people call "highly civilized Europe."
