That's just a tiny fraction of the plot.Flynn has been looking closely at IQ tests—those things that supposedly measure intelligence. Tell me, do you honestly think our social fabric has improved compared to how things were fifty years ago? We might have made massive leaps in technology, but when it comes to our quality of life and social cohesion, we haven't moved an inch.
IQ tests aren't some absolute, flawless measurement of intelligence—not even when you're just looking at logical reasoning—but they serve as a solid benchmark. Over the last 50 years, the standard of living in developed nations like the US has climbed steadily. Regardless of your personal take on it, technological progress has fundamentally improved life in these societies. We have better living conditions, easier access to information, and instant connectivity with people all over the country. From an evolutionary standpoint, this shift has triggered a massive jump in average IQ scores. It leads to a pretty straightforward conclusion: society plays a massive role in driving an individual's intellectual advancement.
What kind of mess are we dealing with here? Is it a heap of factual errors, logical fallacies, or just plain bad writing?
boldfox88 said:I completely agree. Odyssey is an absolute masterpiece, truly one of a kind. Honestly, I doubt even ZZu would be posting about it if they hadn't watched it specifically just to come here and tear it apart. 😁
And let's be real, Interstellar is also a brilliant film. You simply cannot dismiss it as some mindless modern flick.
boldfox88 said:If Odyssey showed us just how much like tiny mice we are compared to the vastness of space—or how insignificant our lives and our entire species are against the ancient age of Earth and the universe—then Interstellar proved exactly how little we actually grasp about any of it.
Setting aside the heavy existential questions, Interstellar does an incredible job of highlighting how flawed our perception of linear time and three-dimensional space truly is. The final scenes might lean a bit too hard into sentimentality for some, but I haven't seen another film tackle the issues of temporal causality and spacetime perception quite like this one.

If we are talking about science fiction, isn't the entire experience built upon a specific set of rules and dogmas defined by the film and its subsequent lore?
I’ve mentioned this before. It’s about the story itself—how it grapples with those heavy, existential questions and truly forces a confrontation between the individual and the vastness of the cosmos. As for the pacing, I suppose that's purely subjective, though I have little patience for anything that feels sluggish or lacks momentum.
vivideagle7 said:Honestly, I’d probably forgive them even if they hadn't included Alien in Prometheus or Max in Mad Max, as long as the actual movie was good.
vivideagle7 said:It's true, though—they definitely made a massive pivot. If you look at the drop in quality 😁
Jessica Gonzalez said:I guess I don't mind being called an extremist if it means I get to call almost every recent movie garbage. You can tell me I'm conservative or some kind of generational chauvinist, maybe, but please don't compare me to AJ or people like him.

I personally find Interstellar to be quite excellent; I was disappointed at first, but after a few viewings, there are enough compelling elements that I quickly forgave the logical and factual inconsistencies. It’s something I rarely do.
As Patrick Martin suggested, perhaps one should relax a bit before heading to the theater or browsing Pirate Bay—maybe enjoy a glass or two of red wine... And I suspect that filmmakers sometimes intentionally weave in certain illogicalities, whether to induce a specific psychological state in the viewer or simply to drive the narrative forward and encourage repeat viewings.
Jessica Gonzalez said:Not really, I don't think so. When I pay for a ticket, I just expect the filmmakers to actually do their jobs properly.
I honestly can't remember a single decent "virtual" movie from the last few years. By that, I mean sci-fi or those big blockbusters. I guess Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise was somewhat coherent, even if the ending was a total mess. Everything else has been pretty terrible. Gravity felt like a complete letdown, I think I've complained about Prometheus more than any other movie on this forum, and Interstellar might actually be one of the most confusingly written films out there. And don't even get me started on all the sequels and prequels. What they did to Indiana Jones probably should have been illegal.
