Best Sci-Fi Directors? in Movies ·
Mark Cruz15 said:I've only ever seen Solaris from Tarkovsky. It’s not my absolute favorite, but it's a pretty decent movie.

Honestly, I doubt I’ll get much more out of Stalker either. I just don't see the point—there's no real connection for me between live-action movies and poetry or philosophy, especially when we're talking about Sci-Fi. That stuff wears thin on me fast. If I'm going to invest time in a space flick, I want actual, meaningful action once they hit orbit, you know?
Based on that quote from Solaris, it sounds like they went out into deep space just to realize that humans need other humans. Humanity. Alienation. Whatever.
What a load of pretentious garbage.
I don't need that crap in a movie. If I wanted all that deep thinking, I'd just read a book.

casualraven said:That whole thing with how Andrei Tarkovsky is obsessed with perfectly geometric shots—using these incredibly mundane settings until they feel almost dreamlike—plus the entire philosophy behind the movie (which is basically his trademark regardless of where he sets the story)... man, I... honestly, forget it, it’s just the rule of 😁

I mean, sure, there's something there, but it's still way too thin to actually blow my mind.
For me, it was all about the sound design.
Those low-end sounds, like when you hear the creaking floorboards or footsteps... that stuff was freaking 🙂
And that drunk poet carrying a plastic bag? Easily the most intense character in the whole thing.

man, I’ve had more battles with sleep trying to sit through Stalker than I care to admit—it’s basically a three-hour marathon 🤦 )
so what's the deal, you poor soul? You went out to the dump just to film some sci-fi? if you actually saw some kind of beauty in those shots, then cough it up—tell me which scene it was so maybe I can wrap my head around it too.

Look, when it comes to the visuals in sci-fi, Ridley Scott is untouchable. Period.

Alright, quick intro 👍

1. Ridley Scott
2. Verhoeven
3. James Cameron

Ridley Scott makes the most intense stuff—all about shadows and constant threats, basically a director who paints with light
Paul—more of a subtle, trashy maestro
James—the absolute king of tech and high-octane action

Btw, just finished watching Stalker
What a total trip 🤦

These three are my favorites because their concepts feel like they jumped straight out of a comic book, which is exactly how it should be
imho

Man, what a waste. I went and watched the Fincher version first (if you can even call it that 🙄) just so I could sit down right now and watch the actual real deal. I honestly don't get how someone can be such a total moron that they decide to make a literal carbon copy of this movie within such a tiny window of time. Seriously though, this flick isn't just twice as good as Fincher's rip-off—it's three times better.
The whole thing centers on Noomi, and she absolutely crushed it. She basically carried the entire movie on her back (honestly, makes sense why Ridley Scott tapped her for Prometheus)
The directing is more than solid. It’s actually kind of tripping me out because I felt like I’d already seen everything in Fincher's blatant plagiarism 😠
The acting feels real, which is a huge plus for me—unlike that fake-sounding Daniel Craig vibe. They nailed the important stuff way better than Fincher did, too. Like, the dynamic with the guardian, the chemistry between the two leads... just all the resolutions feel much more well-executed.

And that ending? Total icing on the cake.

Man, what an unforgettable movie. I watched it right when I was hitting that late puberty phase, and let me tell you, that raw teenage jealousy was hitting me like a freight train. Uff.
I feel like everyone could use a little reminder of that one day.
Seriously, why is it always Ultra? Like, does anyone actually else get this, or am I just losing my mind here?
Walter Grant5 said:wait, we got a timeline issue here?

I already brought that up and Christian Taylor3 is asking

I don't get this "patronizing at the end" thing either, like the "Well boys & girls..." part? You're all over the place, Walter Grant5. 😁

And I'm telling him the same thing

The last scene.

and that's what you hit me with

He's referencing it, the last scene where Gibson kicks off his final speech with "Well Boys & Girls..."

ask me instead🙂

Read what you're reading. If nothing else, read Little Red Riding Hood.

Christian Taylor3 asks and answers at the same time, so it's obvious we're talking about that final scene 🤷

Just finished reading Pinocchio 😁

That condescending tone didn't sit well with me, though I get why some people wouldn't mind—it’s all about how you see things, I guess.😉

Oh, please, you're the one who isn't following 🙂the plot here.
Do you honestly think I’d even bother getting into any kind of conversation WITH YOU 🙄unless I had spent a massive amount of time prepping myself first?

Yeah, he’s talking about her—that last scene where Gibson kicks off his big wrap-up speech with "Well boys & Girls..."

just ask me 🙂

When I called them "flashy," I wasn't even really attacking the music itself—I was talking about that whole visual vibe you nailed when you compared them to Europe
Those greasy, over-styled looks🙄 honestly just totally killed the mood for me, and it made the actual songs start feeling way too formulaic
Look, I’m telling you, my favorites are from the Ready n' Willing era. Back then, they actually looked like real rockers, where the music actually came first and all that...

Maybe, maybe...
Come on, just drop a few of the absolute best tracks from that Whitesnake / 1987 album,
I was just saying which specific era I used to blast back in the day,
I haven't really messed around with their stuff before or after that stretch.

Austin Fisher said:I mean, I seriously can't believe nobody has started a thread for this killer band yet......

Honestly, I’ve been wondering the same thing 😕

To be fair, my older brother—he's two years ahead of me—basically "poisoned" my brain with them. We shared a room back in the day, and he had them blasting on the record player constantly. And honestly? Zero regrets.
That said, I usually lean toward stuff that's a bit heavier and darker, like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, or Van Halen, rather than the "newer" era like Soundgarden, Nirvana, or QOTSA.

Anyway, enough rambling
Here are my absolute favorite albums of theirs
(And obviously, Ready n' Willing is the undisputed king for me)

After a certain point, things got all messy with their lineup changes and drama, so I kind of drifted away...

So, here’s a few highlights in my humble opinion:

Ready N Willing 😍
Sweet Talker 😍
Carry your load 😍
Ain't gonna cry no more 😍
Saints An' Sinners 😍

They even changed the title, so now it's officially called 'How I Spent My Summer Vacation'. Interestingly enough, the movie isn't even going to hit theaters in America:

Quote: Now, we say box office, but from the sounds of the announcement picked up by Deadline, Gringo will be bypassing cinemas altogether in favour of a risky gamble with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment on Video-On-Demand and Blu-ray releases. It'll arrive, in the USA, at least, on DirecTV May 1 and then hit other US telly providers' VOD services once DTV's exclusive period is up. After that will come the usual disc/digital download opportunities.

😵

It's pretty obvious they're just trying to cash in, which feels a lot like No Country for Mel Gibson.

🤣

Christian Taylor3 said:briskhound2, if a movie kicks things off with that kind of narration, the golden rule is that you stick with it all the way through to the end. In this case, I think it works pretty well—it’s subtle and keeps the story moving (and don't forget, everything was already set up from the very first foreshadowing, so it feels seamless right from the jump). I also don't quite get that "patronizing" vibe at the end, where he goes, "Well boys & girls..." It’s a bit much, Walter Grant5. 😁

And that's my sign-off on Lou's take.

The main thing is that we can all agree on one point—Mel delivers. 😍

You've got my signature, sir. ☕

For real, their styling is just... off 🙄
it gives me major 80s adult film vibes
but hey, they're a decent enough band 👍
those three songs are basically their entire identity/best work
