OCD: General Discussion Thread in Psychology & Therapy ·
I’m also stuck dealing with this disorder... it doesn’t totally wreck my daily life or anything, but man, it can be absolutely draining sometimes. For me, it’s all about the math—I find myself constantly tallying up everything in sight... license plates, page numbers in a book, even barcodes on products... you name it. And there's a logic to the madness: if the final sum ends up being an even number, the answer to whatever "imaginary question" I've set for myself has to be NO, but if it's odd, then it's a YES.
(Obviously, it keeps that whole predictable pattern going—YES, NO, YES, NO...)

Anyone else out there getting completely played by numbers? 😁

I am trying to educate myself a little at a time. Thank you.

At the end of the day, you've just gotta face the music and have the drive to actually deal with it—taking the meds when needed, sticking to therapy, getting out into the fresh air whenever possible... basically giving it everything you've got. You have to believe you can actually win this fight instead of just throwing in the towel early.

I was actually watching some big-shot LA Psychiatrist on TV the other day (can't remember his name for the life of me), and he was saying that anxiety and depression are totally manageable these days. The main thing is just spotting the red flags and reaching out for help as soon as you can. It's all about being proactive.

Good luck.

Oh, and don't go assuming I'm even human. Maybe neither you nor I actually are.😁

Medication isn't the only way to fix things.

Psychotherapy works too.

So, how long does it usually take before things actually start moving?

So, I was grabbing drinks with a buddy the other night and he starts venting to me about these weird circular patches popping up on his face. It’s pretty obvious since he usually rocks this thick beard, but now there are just these bald spots appearing in circles all over the place...

He already went to see a dermatologist and they prescribed some cream, but honestly? It hasn't done squat... the spots are still showing up. Now he’s low-key freaking out that it might spread to the hair on his head too.

If anyone here actually knows what's going on with this, please reach out...

Thanks a ton!

It likely starts way back in early childhood, when moms react to every little cry by shoving a pacifier into the kid's mouth. 😁

I don't know if you've ever dealt with being overweight yourself, but let me tell you, it can be a brutal, messy fight—mostly against your own head.
I honestly have so much respect for people who manage to drop significant weight; more often than not, they show way more strength of character than anyone else ever could. 🙂

I was pretty chubby growing up, so I can tell you firsthand that wrestling with those extra pounds isn't just "not easy"—it's a nightmare.

People look at weight gain and act like it's some simple math problem: "Oh, just fix your diet, hit the gym, and boom, results!" But it doesn't work like that at all...

For people who struggle with weight (and I'm not talking about those dealing with hormonal issues or pure genetics), there's a much deeper issue at play. It manifests as this constant urge to just shovel food into your face, creating this endless, vicious cycle that's incredibly hard to break... though it is possible.

I actually mentioned to the OP above that they should definitely sit down with a therapist, because carrying that extra weight leaves deep scars on your psyche, especially when you're young.

Look, you’re way too young to be dealing with any kind of extreme dieting crap... you're still growing and everything is still settling... so if you want my advice, just start by overhauling what you eat, make sure you're actually staying active (honestly, just start with a solid hour of brisk walking every day—throw some music on your headphones and just 😉), but most importantly, and this is the big one in my book—go talk to a therapist. There’s a reason you're putting on weight... I mean, sure, you eat a lot, but there’s an underlying reason *why* you're eating that much... hunger isn't the only culprit here. Besides, you're young, you're still figuring out who you are, and those insecurities that come with being overweight aren't easy to deal with; they leave a mark on your personality for life if you don't tackle them early on...

Bottom line is, you can lose the weight, you just have to stay consistent. I’m rooting for you, and honestly, I fully expect you to pop up on the 'Relationships' board later to start a thread titled 'How I became the hottest guy in school and snatched the girls away from everyone who used to mock me.' 😎

Just stick to water and nothing else.
Work out as much as humanly possible—sports, hitting the gym, running, whatever.
Start smoking 😍 it’ll kill your appetite.

What kind of absolute moron gives advice like that to a fifteen-year-old... seriously...
