The movie is decent enough, I’d say it’s a pretty solid debut for them. But honestly, there are quite a few plot holes that left me scratching my head.
What really bothered me, though, was how underdeveloped the relationship between the sisters felt. You get this sense that they are incredibly close, but it feels superficial—like we only see their bond through how they’re positioned together in a room, rather than through actual substance. We hardly see them actually talking or interacting in a way that feels real...
And don't even get me started on the other sisters; they felt completely sidelined.
Are you thinking about heading to Amsterdam next weekend too? 😁
Actually, forget it—just tell your friends to come over and take some photos for you instead...
p.s. Someone actually had the bright idea today to try and be "hilarious" by slapping "CANCELLED" posters everywhere. Just so we’re clear, the University Welcome Week isn't cancelled, though I suspect those who have clearly undergone surgery to remove their sense of humor will face a slow and agonizing reckoning. You'll all be invited to the feast...
If you're looking to grab tickets for the University of Chicago freshman festivities—specifically the ones for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration—you can pick them up at these locations: - over at South Carolina, specifically in - right at all the various departments within the Faculty of Science, though - you might also find them over at the College of Liberal Arts - or perhaps at the local bookstore located in the heart of downtown Washington, D.C.
Thank you. I will make sure to add all the specific details regarding the Harvard University freshman orientation festivities. As for the MIT student orientation events, you can find information about those tucked away in the section dedicated to students and scholars...
I personally have a few small holes in my cartilage, and I’ve dealt with all the usual headaches from them—just some minor inflammation and swelling that eventually settled down... but I will say this: you absolutely should stick to seeing a doctor or going to an authorized studio, even though, let’s be honest, nobody can truly guarantee you won't hit a nerve—I just happened to get incredibly lucky.
Or perhaps you previously had a ring with a much narrower gauge, and now that this new one is wider, the skin simply needs a bit of time to stretch out and adjust...
Well, I suppose the season of sandals and blisters has finally arrived for us all... 😠
First off, I find myself wondering about the actual science behind it—why does fluid accumulate in a blister in the first place? Specifically, what causes that irritated layer of skin to lift away from the surface like that?
Secondly, I was hoping someone might suggest some simple, old-fashioned home remedies or perhaps some budget-friendly over-the-counter options that can help clear these nuisances up a bit faster.
Thanks in advance for any insight you can share! 😍
I suppose it’s a bit of everything, really. If you take those factors and layer on top of them a rather unfortunate childhood—much like the kind of upbringing one might find in a gritty Dickensian novel or even some of the darker stories out of Chicago—and then mix in an environment where everyone simply chooses to look the other way, you end up with the perfect recipe for a female assassin. 👎
Oh, Old CROCODILE... I only managed to catch the final three minutes of that film, so I can't say I have the full picture just yet...
To be honest, the awards caught me quite off guard too. While I think Dreams and Desires is absolutely wonderful, if I were a betting woman, I’d say it actually had a much better shot at winning the Audience Award. But hey, I suppose 😬
In my humble opinion, Leviathan and Marusic didn't quite earn their accolades this time around. Actually, looking at the rest of the winners, even they don't seem particularly stellar to me... though I suppose I should be relieved that the Academy Award didn't go to one of those silent films. 😈
Even Ivan budalica was anticipating a victory there. 😍
They were on every single morning. The moment you hear "cartoons," everyone assumes it’s just mindless stuff for toddlers, isn't that right? Even having such an unconventional screening schedule didn't exactly steer people away from that assumption. And honestly, trying to comb through the entire program is quite the chore 🙄
I have to say, I absolutely adore the music in this one!!! 🤣 It’s got this little bit of country blues played on a synthesizer... such a wonderfully wacky short film 😬
UNACCOMPANIED Lady is absolutely brilliant!!! The soundtrack, however, was just completely grating on my ears. It doesn't really matter if the animation style is a bit unpolished or ugly; there is such a fun story at its core...
I personally wasn't a fan of RABBIT... 😕 To make matters worse, I had a child sitting right behind me—accompanied by her mother and grandmother—who, after the initial shock of watching "Flesh," 😁 started repeatedly asking, "When are the cartoons for kids starting?" Imagine that: a four-year-old staying up until midnight at an animation festival 🙄
I’ve been thinking about how "While Darwin sleeps" actually incorporates certain animation elements, whereas "Dies Irae" feels more like a piece of pure experimental cinema. It strikes me that their judging criteria might be a bit inconsistent, if I’m being honest. 👎
Edit: Does anyone feel like they could predict the winners? Personally, I suspect "Ryan" might walk away with the Jury Prize; there's something about that story regarding a declining artist that usually resonates with judges. Based on the buzz I'm seeing, though, the Audience Award seems destined for "Ivica Budalica."
Yesterday was easily my least favorite day of the entire festival... If it hadn't been for that Russian short about the edge of a fool, I would have walked away feeling completely let down. The American films were an absolute train wreck... honestly, is it too much to ask for something decent that actually feels original without being such a complete disaster? But then again, I suppose people would rather see anything at all produced here than some low-effort 3D Balthazar 🙄
I ended up heading out before the final screening because I was just totally wiped out, so would anyone be kind enough to give me a recap of what I missed?
Carol Jackson45 said:I found that one pretty mediocre, perhaps because I had heard the story so long ago, and the animation didn't really blow me away either.
Since I hadn't actually heard the story before, the whole thing felt like a bit of a letdown to me. As for the animation, it wasn't anything particularly special...
It seems like everyone is staying quiet about yesterday's cartoons—they must have been a massive disappointment, I suppose.😎
Now, I have to say, Jasper Morell is absolutely brilliant, though I can't help but harbor a nagging fear that any potential sequels might somehow tarnish such a perfect first impression. But, really, I truly hope I'm just being overly cautious.😉
It’s already 7 PM here—which means I'll likely be up until midnight once again, lost in this...
I just sincerely hope we aren't treated to too much of that overly pretentious, "arty-farty" nonsense.😠
I didn't quite make it in time for the first two screenings yesterday. Everyone seems to be raving about how great that D was.
As for the concept, I found myself completely exhausted by the one featuring the graffiti and the one with the dog. Honestly, that graffiti piece would have been absolutely brilliant if it had just been a short, two- or three-minute music video style clip; instead, the current length makes it feel incredibly taxing to sit through.
The rest were perfectly fine, I suppose.
But the last one? That was easily my favorite. The animation quality was stunning, and truthfully, the narrative felt substantial enough to carry an entire feature film. While it might not exactly reinvent the wheel in terms of originality, there is a beautiful sense of cohesion to it all... and I actually heard a rumor that they are already filming sequels for that one.👎
Jeffrey Sullivan4 said:No... but there is one from 2000 that fits the description perfectly, Constantine Bronze: "Au bout du monde." Is that the one?
Yes, that’s exactly it... I actually realized just a moment ago that I had botched the year myself, but you all clearly managed to figure it out regardless.
Thank you so much!
And by any chance, do you happen to know if there's somewhere I might be able to download that animation?
I can’t say I was exactly walking on sunshine when I heard about him...
But honestly, they seem to be working with a much tighter budget this year—you actually have to pay an entrance fee for the program $0.67 and don't expect to find any cool merch like those t-shirts and tote bags we picked up last time 😕
I have to admit, I find myself dreading those overly long animated features that try too hard to capture the essence of the American Dream.
However, I must say this particular one felt somewhat different from the rest...
As for our local production—it looks absolutely stunning, truly top-tier work, but the runtime just drags on far too long for my taste. It has left me quite curious about the literary origins of this piece; I wonder what specific motivations drove the creators when adapting the source material. Has anyone here actually sat down and read the book (Thomas Hobbes)?
Well, they always seem to front-load the festival with the absolute best films on the first day. I can't help but worry that today will be a total washout—just empty slots and mediocre stuff... I have this sinking feeling about it...
For the most part, though, things have been decent. That one film, Stormy Wind, was actually quite entertaining at first because the soundtrack was so lovely, but by the end, it just felt completely unfinished and left me wanting more...
The rest of them were all pretty enjoyable to me.
By the end of the day, I found myself torn between watching The Way to Mars (I am absolutely obsessed with stop-motion animation 😍) and Moon and Son, which wasn't exactly beautifully animated, but the story itself was incredibly powerful...
edit: Does anyone happen to remember the title of that animated short from two years ago—the one about the border guard who lives in a little house on top of a steep, pointy hill? I’ve been dying to find that specific one again!!!
