Period talk: Questions and advice in Women's Health ·
silvermarlin9 said:Ladies,
I've run into a bit of an issue today that's bothering me quite a bit. I would appreciate any comments or responses if anyone knows what's going on or has dealt with something similar.
Normally, my period should arrive around September 22nd (I can't be certain since I haven't been meticulously tracking it on my calendar, but let's go with that).
Today is September 16th, and I've had light bleeding all day—very faint. Along with that, I have typical menstrual cramps, though they are also milder than usual.
The fact that it arrived 5 or 6 days early doesn't worry me, as I've heard a ten-day variance is perfectly normal. Additionally, I was under a significant amount of stress, which fortunately wrapped up at the beginning of September, so I attribute the shift to that.🙂

I should also mention that I deal with thyroid issues (Hashimoto's, hypothyroidism) and have been taking Levothyroxine for two months now. On top of that, I'm currently sick with a standard virus—runny nose, cough, and the like.
Is there reason for concern? Is it possible that this cold or the hypothyroidism is linked to this change in my cycle?

P.S. I would be grateful if a doctor or someone who has had this exact experience could respond... when it comes to health, people don't care for guesswork.😉

Regards,

With hypothyroidism, cycles tend to be delayed more often than they are early, but since you just started hormone replacement therapy, it is highly likely this is the cause.

I have hyperthyroidism, and I recall my cycles being completely erratic; it took quite some time for my hormones to stabilize before my cycle normalized.
If this light bleeding is brown in color, that is yet another indicator of hormonal imbalance.

Everything I've mentioned comes directly from my endocrinologist.🙂

We really need to start taking preventive diagnostics more seriously. It shouldn't just be about reacting when things go wrong; we need to be proactive. If you aren't regularly checking your insulin levels, C-peptide, fasting glucose, and HbA1c, you're flying blind. And don't even get me started on kidney function—you absolutely have to keep an eye on your transaminases, urea, creatinine, potassium, and sodium. Get ahead of it!
But let’s be real—at the end of the day, they’re actually quite decent.

Is this something handled by a primary care physician?

I went back to see my doctor and requested a full blood panel and urinalysis. Here are the results:

BLOOD - CBC 2 (reference range 4-24)
GLUCOSE 3.2 (reference range 4.2-6.0)
ALP 52 (ref. range 54-119)

URINE - SG greater than 1.030 (reference range 1.002-1.030)
Ketones 2.0 (reference range less than 0.5)
Leukocytes 5-8 (reference range 0-2)
Erythrocytes 2-4 (reference range 0-2)

The fever, headaches, and nausea haven't let up. My doctor is essentially flying blind, unsure which specialist or diagnostic test to order next, and frankly, I’m even more lost than she is. Does anyone have any insight into what might be going on? 😕

Drink three cups of hot peppermint tea and you should see results within a day. 🙂
(I only resort to this method when I'm significantly overdue and truly out of options.)

Warning: Peppermint can stimulate uterine contractions, which means your period might be heavier or more painful. Use this method only as a last resort. 😉

Two years ago, I dealt with a fever during an allergy flare-up, but back then I was coughing uncontrollably and my nose was running like a faucet. Right now, I have zero allergy symptoms, so I'm skeptical that this is the culprit... 🙄

I’ll attempt to outline my situation...

I am young (early 20s). About ten years ago, I contracted a strange virus that left me with a persistent low-grade fever of 99°F, which lingered for a year or so—doctors were unable to pinpoint the cause.

For the past two or three weeks, I have been dealing with a constant temperature of 99.5°F, accompanied by nausea and fatigue. For about the last week, this has escalated to include headaches, eye pain, a sore throat, and jaw pain. The jaw issue is particularly grating; I can't fully open my mouth without experiencing a dull ache, almost as if someone is gripping that joint where the jaw hinges. Even drinking plain water has become a struggle, as if my body has simply stopped signaling for fluids or food. I have to force myself to eat at least a piece of fruit or a small lunch every day. My appetite is completely gone, and I’ve dropped 6 pounds.

I went through an extremely stressful ordeal a few days ago, which I assume has worsened the loss of appetite. However, stress doesn't account for the fever, the headaches, or the other symptoms that have been persisting for some time now.

Tylenol occasionally knocks the fever down briefly and eases the headache, but that isn't a permanent solution.

As time passes, I’m ruling out a simple virus since that should have cleared up by now. On the other hand, an allergy seems unlikely given that I have no coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, or congestion. What else could this be?

My doctor, unfortunately, offers the same blanket advice for everything: lie down, rest, take some Tylenol, and it will pass. But I cannot live indefinitely on fever reducers and bed rest.

These are all side effects. Does this mean these specific pills just aren't right for my body, or is my system simply going through a period of adjustment? 🙂

When I first switched over to birth control patches—essentially the same hormones as pills, just delivered via a patch—the side effects hit me pretty hard. I checked in with my doctor, and she advised me to hang in there for at least three months. Her take was that these initial reactions are standard during the adjustment period. If things haven't leveled out by then, she suggested it would be time to look into alternative options. 🙂
