Dealing with lactose intolerance? in Health ·
Bryan Chavez37, hey, let me know once you get those liver and kidney tests back so we can figure out what's actually going on with you. I went through a phase where my stomach issues were just brutal—pretty much exactly what you described here—but I could never pin down the cause. I had my liver and kidneys checked via blood work and everything came back fine, though that was quite a few years ago now. Hmm... It's funny because things have settled down quite a bit lately. I always feel like I've tweaked something in my diet, but I can't quite put my finger on it... Maybe it's just a healthier environment overall, or less stress on my system... I have to admit, I've been snacking on quite a bit of dark chocolate lately, and I've been avoiding all those foods I know mess with my stomach (there are so many types of fruits and veggies like that). Plus, I tend to spice things up with chili or peppers pretty often—and I always throw some cumin in my beans... Could that be part of it?

Bryan Chavez37 said:Ugh... I’ve got a mountain of issues here. Honestly, I just need to vent for a second. Everything makes me bloat—literally everything, even just a couple of sips of water. It doesn't feel like an intestinal issue because the bloating hits the moment I swallow something; it feels like it's definitely happening in my stomach. And don't even get me started on the gas... it's awful. Digestion is relatively okay, though—no major struggles there. Is anyone else dealing with something similar?

I really hope you aren't consuming much milk or dairy. Maybe try keeping a food diary? It might help you spot if there's any sort of correlation... You know, stress can be a huge factor too—like, really massive. Also, just make sure you're actually eating well. Maybe try some multivitamins or calcium citrate to give your immune system a little boost. And honestly, it wouldn't hurt to get your liver and kidneys checked out...

Sean Richardson9 said:Personally, I experience some pretty intense cramping if I drink milk on an empty stomach. If I have it as part of a full meal, though, I generally don't run into any issues at all. My doctor mentioned that this happens because of a deficiency in the enzyme needed to break down dairy—essentially something similar to 😁 enteropathy. It sounds like your situation might be a bit more complicated than mine, so it would probably be best to check in with your physician about which supplements might help or specifically which brand of Soymilk you should look for...
It’s also entirely possible that what you're dealing with is something relatively minor, such as just being unable to handle unpasteurized milk.
Anyway, I wish you the very best of luck with everything.

That enzyme is called lactase. It's totally normal for almost all animals, except humans—well, most humans who never really stopped drinking milk in the first place.

It's not like we're talking about a toddler needing milk substitutes. 🤣

Up until now, through twenty-five years of life, everything seemed perfectly fine... and then, quite suddenly, disaster struck! It’s rather ironic because I’ve always absolutely loved milk and used to consume it in massive quantities. I’ve made a slow, tentative transition over to Soymilk lately, but honestly, spending about $60-$23 every single week just on milk feels rather steep.

As for things like probiotics, various cheeses, or sour cream... I suppose I can tolerate those 😍

Honestly, "Soymilk" isn't even real milk. It’s just overpriced liquid that isn't worth what you're paying, and it can actually be pretty bad for you too... unless it's made from fermented soy, I guess.

I honestly have no clue if there are specific tests for that. Honestly, just cut out all milk and dairy for a week or two—and don't cheat!—and you'll see how you feel. You forgot to mention Irritable Bowel Syndrome, too... doctors often throw that diagnosis around just because your stomach is acting up and they aren't quite sure why yet. 😉 If it isn't that, maybe look into your liver... sometimes people with liver issues end up seeing those symptoms show up as stomach problems instead.

I'm doing alright—healthy and happy—for now.

The manufacturer finally sent over their findings. They’re admitting it doesn't meet the usual standards, though they're claiming there's no actual health risk involved.

I haven't had a chance to drop off a sample for private testing yet, so I can't really compare the data; but if anyone's curious, you can check out the results here.

You mentioned the water had a really strong smell. So how does their own analysis report say there's no odor? Makes zero sense. Anyway, did you hand over all the bottles to them? Did you manage to save one? You might still have time to get it tested independently...

A phobia isn't just "refusing" things on purpose, and we've already touched on how phobias work...

So you're nearsighted—can you really not see the screen clearly without glasses? Give it a shot.

I'm at -1.75 myself. I only pull out my glasses (which are -1.25) when I'm watching TV from across the room or heading out into the world... navigating the city, driving, or looking out toward Mount Rainier... basically whenever I need to see things far away. Glasses actually make my eyes feel pretty tense, so I only wear them when I absolutely have to.

Kenneth White6 said:I was wondering if there's some kind of workaround to breeze through recruitment without that one nasty little procedure... you know, the blood draw. I have a massive phobia of needles, injections, the whole deal. Or maybe I should just call it a fear of invasive medical stuff, since I can look at a needle now without losing my mind. Last time I had to get blood taken back in '97, the doctors practically had to hold me up... what a disaster. I couldn't even stand on my own feet for an hour, just shaking like crazy... Man...

Look, just be honest with the nurses who are supposed to draw your blood. Tell them what's going on, vent if you have to, and that's that. They aren't going to force a needle into you. You're not a kid anymore, and phobias aren't something to just brush off. In the end, if they can't get your blood, they might just send you to talk to their psychiatrist and call it a day. And hey, if they can't clear you for service without those labs, that’s not on you—it’s just how it works, and a psychiatrist will confirm it. Problem solved. Don't sweat it. If this phobia is as real as you say (maybe see your own doctor first to get something in writing?), don't let them push you. Don't let them mess with you—that's not helping anyone...

By the way, some guy popped up on a forum about civilian service claiming he's been dodging the draft for years by making sure he's never cleared for duty. Basically, he shows up for his physical, checks in so there's a record he was there, and then walks out before any actual exams happen. Since there's no paperwork saying he's fit for service, they can't draft him, and since he technically showed up for the appointment, they can't really throw him in jail for skipping it. Clever, I guess...

Maybe we should just cure Kenneth White6 of his phobia before he’s forced to go in for a full physical exam! 😉

Look, do whatever you want, but I wouldn't suggest ditching the toothpaste just because some environmental group might try to sue someone over an ethics violation for citing a study... totally paranoid, right? 😬
But hey! That's just me!

Who said anything about quitting toothpaste? No way. I'm definitely not starting to drink fluoridated water or anything like that... 😉

Sandra King86 said:You really need to read the whole article. 😉

I get how some people struggle with reading stuff meant for academic journals, but dustycanyon6 is trying to tell you... there's really no need to get all worked up about it.

Seriously, you have to read the entire thing first! 😉

The Environmental Working Group, a Washington D.C. based advocacy Group, recently filed an ethics complaint against Douglass because He allegedly cited Bassin in his report, despite the opposite conclusions reached by the two studies. Douglass said he just listed Bassin’s study as a related publication and not a reference.

It's exactly that "he said" excuse that's going to land Douglass in court. 😉 Obviously, he can't "replicate" those results, because if he did, he'd be admitting his entire 15-year study was a total bust. Personally, I don't care what Douglass thinks... I want to see if someone else—someone independent who isn't on the payroll of big toothpaste corporations—can actually replicate the findings or not.

Since this comment was published in a Harvard magazine, there’s clearly some weight behind it... the editorial board wouldn't have greenlit it if it were just nonsense. If they were spreading lies, the author and the editors would be facing massive defamation lawsuits for "insinuating" that a tenured professor's research was anything less than solid. As for those "parameters" people keep bringing up... you really need to sit down and read the full piece—actually, both articles—before deciding whether the data is actually lacking or not.

An instructor teaching oral health and epidemiology over at Harvard School of Dental Medicine led this study looking at kids between 6 and 8 years old. Apparently, those who drank fluoridated water—which, thank goodness, isn't how things work in most of Europe, since only Americans seem to go for that—have a five times higher chance of developing bone cancer before they even hit twenty compared to kids who didn't drink it.

But wait, it gets even messier. The instructor’s own dissertation mentor spent fifteen years and a cool $1.3 million on "valuable" research that supposedly found absolutely zero link between fluoride and cancer. And if you want the kicker... the whole study was funded by Colgate! It’s wild what money can do... honestly, it's a miracle anyone sees the truth when people just choose to look the other way.

I always had this gut feeling that I shouldn't quit smoking... figured there'd be something out there just for me eventually. 😲

Now, I can't tell if you're joking or being dead serious—but if you actually believe this, you're being incredibly naive.

Nobody is claiming these things are "healthy." They’re just calling them "healthier," which is a total stretch if you ask me. At the end of the day, they still poison everyone around the smoker. It's pure stupidity. I mean, why wouldn't someone just toss some ascorbic acid and mint into a regular cigarette and call it a day? 😵
