It isn’t actually being honest that makes someone unlikable... it’s when people are just "cold"... those who toss out the truth without any warmth or empathy, just totally indifferent to how it lands

I mean, you could tell someone, "Look, you're being a total jerk," or you could say, "I feel like you're focusing a bit too much on yourself right now. It might not be smart in the long run, because you risk pushing away the people who care about you..."

The first sentence > "Look, you're being a total jerk" ....is basically just a blunt statement that reeks of arrogance. The speaker is basically deciding they have the right to talk down to you like that in the first place. Naturally, the expected reaction is pretty much, "Who cares what you think?" ...
.
But with the second sentence, you'd have to be a bit of an idiot to get offended...
. In that one, you can actually see genuine concern—a real desire to offer advice and actually help them out
.
That first speaker is only focused on venting their own opinion. They don't give a damn about how it sounds to the other person or if that harsh truth will actually do any good... whereas the second speaker is focused on the person they're talking to. They're delivering the truth, sure, but their main goal is to help that person "see the light" through it
.
It all comes down to delivery. There are a million ways to be honest
. The real question is what our actual goal is: are we trying to lecture someone, rub it in their face, annoy them, or insult them? Or are we trying to actually help them by pointing out where they're slipping up? We can share even the toughest truths if we do it with kindness, warmth, and a sincere desire for their well-being
