I just want to know one thing here:

if some of you actually thought it was great, doesn't that mean the director managed to pull off a decent (and actually watchable!!) movie about something that basically has zero plot? I mean, we're talking over two hours of stuff happening in one single location. 🤔

If that's the case, then it has to be good. That's just incredibly hard to pull off, I guess. 🙂

I guess I agree. It feels like maybe Arnold Schwarzenegger and Stallone just got a little too carried away one night and promised to be bros for life, so now they just keep paying homage to each other in their movies.

Hey, you weirdos! 😁

I’d rather pass away than skip posting this one.😁
It doesn't really matter if anyone actually cares about this silly movie, but I really have to tell you guys about this:

The movie was filmed back in 1991. You should probably pay attention to that specific year.

The story takes place somewhere around 2023, I think. Sylvester Stallone plays this tough cop from 1991 who gets frozen and then thawed out in that future we just mentioned (because, obviously, he’s the only guy in this new world who can catch an equally nasty criminal).

Sandra Bullock plays this cute modern-day cop, and then there's this scene:

They’re driving around in some high-tech, new-age vehicle and she starts talking about some President Schwarzenegger.
He interrupts her and asks, "Which President? President Schwarzenegger? You mean the actor?"
And she’s just like, "Yeah, yeah, that's him. He became President."
Stallone just rolls his eyes and goes, "Well, would you look at that. THAT guy became President."

Since Arnie and Sly have always been such good friends, I guess they even put Arnie's ambitions right into a movie back in 1991.

Honestly, you guys, I couldn't believe it!!!!

dustyscout53 said:Sorry if this sounds condescending, but the answer should be pretty obvious.

It’s actually not bad. It came out on Betamax and DVD, and the American translation goes: ???

😛 🙂

dustyscout53, thanks so much for the patronizing tone. *sob*.

But yeah, the answer is exactly what it needs to be. As you can tell from my typing style—lowercase everything—I’m sticking strictly to unedited text... basically, I'm just letting my brain rest.

?? I can't fill that in because I can't remember. I know I saw it at the local video rental shop and it definitely caught my eye (pretty sure it was a Betamax), but I don't recall actually renting it or watching it.

So, I guess I owe you the second half of the answer once I figure it out.

🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

That's great. 👍
I bet they have those in my small town, too.

I wonder if we even get that movie here in the States. I kind of doubt it. 😢
Blue Origin? A sequel to Deep Blue? 😁 😁

We have it. It’s actually not bad at all.

I didn't even know about the L.A. Quartet.
That's good to know, I might have to pick up the other books too 👍
L.A. Confidential (1997) in Movies ·
Since L.A. Confidential is easily in my top five movies from the 90s—and honestly, probably even higher depending on the day—here is a 👍

Russell Crowe is just incredible, Guy Pearce is great too, but Spacey is definitely the best!!

I think I agree with dustyscout53 regarding the book. It's pretty rare to find a movie based on a novel that actually turns out this good.

Daniel Lopez said:Fabian passed away a few years ago

Yeah, my bad. I meant Philip Seymour Hoffman. Fabian is definitely gone.

I don't know. I guess Philip Seymour Hoffman just doesn't sound like Garfield to me. Maybe I'm wrong about that.
I really should hear him do it.
Garfield in Movies ·
I actually caught this one, but not in New York—I saw it in a small town outside of Chicago, so I didn't have to deal with the dubbing (the guy voicing John sounded totally desperate there), and honestly, I’m just relieved I didn't have to listen to Fabian.

Anyway, Garfield is unfortunately very Hollywood, so if you're a fan of the actual comic strips, this probably won't blow your mind at all. Even the vet, who is admittedly cute, sweet, and sexy... I mean, if I were single, I might have a shot...
but it's just NOT IT. Ugh, seriously. 😢

BUT!!! Not everything is bad—if you can just put the comics out of your head, the movie is actually really fun and pretty easy to watch.

Garfield is totally cool, and he's my favorite cat. He's kind of a little troublemaker, almost like me, I guess. 😁 😉 garfield eating lasagna

I guess Zoolander is just a bit much for me. It's all so absurd, you know? Maybe I just don't get it, but he can be pretty exhausting.

I was actually laughing out loud at this one. I don't usually go for American comedies—most of them just rely on those mindless, idiotic gags that I feel like Americans just swallow without thinking—but this one actually had some pretty solid jokes.

Definitely worth checking out on a lazy evening at home. 👍
man, this one is the absolute best:

Originally, they actually had Dustin Hoffman lined up for the role of Rick Deckard in Blade Runner... get this... they were having serious talks with him for weeks until the whole thing just fizzled out.
It’s probably a good thing they ended up giving the part to Harrison Ford. I mean, what would Blade Runner even be without him????
So, if I’m remembering this right, John Travolta actually passed on the lead in American Gigolo. That was the role that eventually made Richard Gere a huge star, while Travolta just sort of drifted into a long cinematic slumber in the meantime.

Mosley retains control of NASCAR in Formula 1 ·
I wouldn't say he was a total disaster. He definitely had some pretty bright spots along the way, but I guess it’s just time for him—much like Mark 😂—to step aside. He’s turned into this somewhat tedious autocrat, and it might be best if he hands the reins over to a much younger, talented guy (and maybe someone a bit more easy on the eyes 😛 )
.
Anyway, Robin Fisher53, what’s your take? 😂

James Roberts87 said:Yeah, that’s why I said it’s garbage. I just don't believe Tarantino could actually make such a trashy movie.

Alright, whatever, it doesn't matter. I think you mentioned somewhere that you're around 18 or 20 years old...

Trust me, you'll probably view certain movies differently later on. It happens to all of us, I guess. 🙂

James Roberts87 said:I just watched Kill Bill, and honestly, I regret doing that. It’s been a long time since I sat through such a bad movie. I guess local networks just broadcast shlock every single day.
Tarantino filmed it, so I figured maybe it wouldn't be that bad, but honestly, it looks like it might actually be worse. I mean, look, *shlock* and *from dusk till dawn* are awesome movies, but this? This is just pure garbage.

What does Kill Bill have to do with HTV? I guess I don't really see the connection. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems pretty random to me.

Maybe if you pack on a few more years and check out another five hundred movies—which, let’s be honest, is what most people here have done—then you can come back and ask me what I think about some absolute piece of shlock.
Sure thing. To you. It might be bad, but it’s not exactly terrible either, I guess. Movie making. It’s a strange thing, I guess. You spend all this time thinking about the craft, the lighting, the way a scene feels, and then you realize how much of it is just pure chaos managed by people in headsets. Maybe that's just the nature of it. It's always been about balancing that vision with the reality of what actually happens on set. I don't know. Just some thoughts. Terms.

If you know what I mean. Or maybe you're just messing around? 😁

walter said:I think the ending works fine. Honestly, after watching The Last Samurai, pretty much any ending feels good. 😬

I mean, what does walter even have against the ending of The Last Samurai? It’s probably one of the most incredible endings from the last decade. You’ve got that green grass, the gentle swaying of the trees and flowers... those lingering looks between the two lovers...
it's just pure poetry, I guess......

Does anyone know if Scarface is available on DVD at the local video rental spots?
I know the movie exists, but I haven't actually managed to sit down and watch it yet since I couldn't track it down—basically, my wife hadn't heard of it either.

p.s. I think the ending of Training Day was alright, I guess, though maybe it could have been a little stronger.
Kill Bill Vol. 1 in Movies ·
I actually remember feeling bad because I listened to some pretty mindless comments from people saying Kill Bill Vol 1 wasn't anything special and they wouldn't miss out if they skipped it. Now, I know those takes were totally pointless.
Since I've been a bit of a subpar cinephile lately—constantly lagging behind on new releases because I just don't have the time (does anyone have some extra? 😁)—
I had intended to watch it eventually, but I kept putting it off.

I finally sat down last night. I'm not exactly a huge Tarantino fan (I say that all the time, I guess), and up until yesterday, Reservoir Dogs was pretty much my number one.

I didn't see it on the big screen like people brag about; I watched it on DVD (thankfully in a decent hi-fi setup), and honestly? I was blown away.🙏

I agree with everything Mark Nelson17 wrote in the opening post.
Everything.

There is such an incredible sensibility in how he mixes legendary milestone films and genres together. He even tailored the soundtrack perfectly: you've got Ennio Morricone, Nancy Sinatra, and those old tracks from the 80s. It’s phenomenal.
The vibe of the characters and the dialogue... it's just perfect.

And I won't even get started on the cinematography, which is actually a hobby of mine.

I also thought that segment where they throw in the comic book animation was awesome. That animation was killer.

So, I'm really looking forward to Kill Bill 2. If it stays at this level, it’ll be great.

👍
