The "Greatest of All Time" debate is always a mess

I was scrolling through some old sports archives today and it got me thinking about how much we love ranking people. Every time a list comes out claiming to be the definitive "top ten" for a specific region or school, it feels like a declaration of war in the comments section.
It's never just about the stats or the trophies, is it? It's about loyalty and how much you value certain eras over others. I’ve seen people lose friendships over whether a legend from the 70s beats a superstar from the 90s, even if they played completely different positions. It feels like these lists are designed more to trigger nostalgia or tribalism than to actually provide a fair assessment of talent.
I honestly think most of these "all-time" rankings are subjective nonsense, but I can't stop reading them. Do you guys think these lists actually hold any weight, or are they just tools for people to argue about their favorite eras?
