Dealing with lactose intolerance? in Health ·
For me, the intolerance shows up in my skin—redness, swollen eyes, stuff like that—usually a few days after I eat it. I was diagnosed using a VEGA device, so it’s not really related to those standard allergy tests (the finger pricking and whatever) which aren't quite sensitive enough for this kind of intolerance.

Anyone else dealing with symptoms like that? It sounds more like an allergy, though I guess I don't know enough about the specifics to be sure.

You'll get used to the Soymilk eventually. As for that yogurt from the organic market, I tried it once—it was gross.
Why are you buying mayo there? There isn't any milk in mayo. And regarding whipped cream, you can find plant-based options at any grocery store—like Oops, for instance—and I think they're actually way cheaper than the soy version.

Does Chocolate Pudding not bother you? It has powdered milk or milk chocolate in it—I forget the exact details, but it definitely contains lactose.

ah, I just felt the need to write this out.
basically, I think Mother Nature did her job. babies drink milk because they need it and it's incredibly healthy (obviously I'm talking about breast milk!).
you get what you need from it, and then—goodbye.

I don't think anyone would be less healthy if they stopped drinking milk once they grew up; if anything, it's the people who keep drinking it... a lot of people deal with lactose intolerance simply because nature never intended for our bodies to spend a lifetime breaking down something we only needed during infancy... I think, for example, that many people in India don't drink milk at all because, evolutionarily speaking, they just don't have lactase.

anyway, I'm done.

I think we can all agree on this 🙂 if you like it, keep drinking it, but those of us who can't really don't have much of a choice...
I read somewhere that 97% of people in Taiwan can't handle milk.

I'm curious—for those with intolerances... did you get bullied in preschool or elementary school because you were forced to drink milk?
I was always pressured to drink it, even though just the smell made me want to gag...
Milk, cocoa, all that stuff...

Milk didn't start bothering me until I was about 13, 😢, so before that, I drank it fine and nobody had to force me.
I actually like milk and dairy products, but unfortunately, none of that works for me anymore...

Look, driftinggull13, don't get worked up, but some people genuinely struggle with milk and lactose. Plus—and it's just a fact—humans are pretty much the only mammals that keep drinking milk into adulthood, and we're drinking someone else's milk at that.
To be honest, I wouldn't even be thinking about whether milk is harmful if it didn't make me feel like crap first.😉

This is from a pharmacy website. It’s talking about infants, but the logic still applies.
"Natural breastfeeding is the optimal way to feed infants. To ensure this happens, international organizations like the World Health Organization and UNICEF have implemented measures such as the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.

Every container of formula must clearly state that 'breast milk is the ideal nutrition for infants.'

Breast milk is best for babies; breastfeeding is recommended for at least the first 6 months before gradually introducing other foods. Breast milk contains the exact balance of nutrients a baby needs for growth and development. About 80% of the cells in milk are macrophages—cells that kill bacteria and viruses—so breastfed children are protected from various illnesses.

WHY IS COW'S MILK A POOR CHOICE?

Cow's milk is designed for calves, which grow much faster than humans and need higher fat stores. It's a terrible nutritional choice for the first 6-8 months. The excessive amounts of certain vitamins and minerals, combined with a lack of iron, vitamin C, and vitamin E, can trigger allergies, kidney issues, and sensitive digestive linings in infants."

how does it actually show up for you guys? digestive issues? stomach cramps, constant diarrhea, bloating...?

You hit the nail on the head regarding symptoms. It can be pretty awkward—especially if you're traveling and don't want to deal with it, though if you skip the dairy, you'll be fine. I guess if you have Silk Soy Milk with some corn flakes, you get used to it pretty fast—it's much better than just drinking it plain.

I didn't drink milk years ago, then about six months back I was like, "let's live healthy, let's add some milk back in."

If it's bothering you, a lot of people argue that drinking cow's milk isn't actually healthy. I mean, humans are basically the only mammals that drink milk as adults—and we're drinking milk from a completely different species, too.😕 🤔

If people can't handle cow's milk, why bother with all these milk imitations? Like, why deal with the weird taste of Silk Soy Milk when you could just eat soy in its actual form?
What's the big deal—does it really have to be milk?

It’s not like it's hard to have cocoa without milk, or just stick to corn flakes or muesli and stuff like that...
It's not that I'm looking to eat soy—I still prefer meat, I guess.

In case anyone’s actually curious, here’s what the folks at the ASPCA have to say about it.

I stick with Silk Soy Milk—it’s fine by me. It does have sugar, though it's brown sugar. I gave the sugar-free versions a shot, but they didn't really do anything for me... 👎
As for other brands, I haven't found much worth drinking besides some SchneeKope soy milk—honestly, it was better than the Silk stuff—but now I can't find it anywhere 😢so if anyone happens to know where it's stocked, let me know....
I tried rice milk too, but I have to admit, I wasn't a fan.

You can find those at Walmart for about $12. That Kinderlada you're talking about is probably just Carobell—you can usually pick it up in health food stores.

Thanx Noemi! 🙂
And I definitely agree with the point about allergies versus intolerances.

Nobody really stopped to think that chocolate syrup might actually contain milk—which would be a reason to avoid it by default.

Well, it’s not like it *always* has milk in it. There are plenty of cases where the ingredients are just chocolate—no dairy if it's dark—or cocoa mixed with vegetable oils. Though, I guess you're right that the dairy-free stuff usually costs way more. A while back, I saw this organic Kinder Bueno-style spread at Whole Foods that was lactose-free and gluten-free, but a 12oz jar was going for about $17👎. I tried it; it wasn't bad, but they pulled it from the shelves—probably because nobody was actually buying it...

Soy yogurts have a pretty specific taste.

Once you get used to the taste of soy, it's not a huge deal, but man, it is expensive!!!!!!!!! A carton of soy milk runs you about $5.00😠

How do you guys deal with restaurants, bakeries, cafeterias, and those kinds of places where they rarely bother listing what's actually in the food?
Half the time, even at the grocery store, the labels aren't even complete—like, they’ll list "chocolate coating" as an ingredient but won't actually say what's in the coating itself. 😠

Are you positive it's just lactose intolerance? I mean—most people who can't handle lactose can actually manage yogurt just fine.

Honestly, I just have a really low pain tolerance 👎 so I start panicking and all that...
As for the yogurt thing, I know most of the lactose is already broken down, so I’m basically trying to build up the courage to actually give it a shot.

Does anyone here actually have an issue with yogurt?😕

A long time ago, Walmart used to carry soy yogurt and it was great, but they haven't had it for ages.

Oh, right—you can find soy puddings at Target—chocolate, vanilla, caramel—and they're actually pretty good.
I haven't tried those specific yogurts yet, but hopefully the soy selection around here improves a bit soon.

I’ve completely cut out dairy—even yogurt—because the pain was getting so bad I’d actually pass out sometimes. As for coffee, honestly, I’ve never been much of a fan, so that hasn't been much of an issue.
I’ve been sticking to Silk soy milk with added calcium, which isn't half bad. They make soy ice cream and yogurts too, but I never see those in any local Walmart around here. Does anyone know where I might actually find them?
Oh, also—has anyone ever tried oat milk?

Hey everyone,
is anyone else dealing with this?
Has anyone here actually tried those Milk Gestant lactase enzymes from Twinlab?
I’m a bit hesitant to even try—dairy usually wreaks havoc on my system.
Does anyone know where I can find some lactose-free milk around here?
