I experienced something very similar during a particularly grueling stretch of high-stress work.

I happened to stumble upon a suggestion here on the forum just the other day about using an ice cube instead of those little square patches.
And honestly, what are the odds? That very same afternoon, I felt one of those familiar, dreaded twinges signaling an outbreak was imminent. So, I grabbed some ice and held it there steadily until the cube had completely melted.
Since then... there hasn't been a single trace of herpes!

Are you taking any kind of contraceptive? One might actually help stabilize things.
