She actually went on record admitting she voted for herself. Well, at least we have that much honesty to work with.
To be honest, my understanding of America as a nation governed by the rule of law comes primarily from Hollywood movies and TV dramas; whether that holds true in reality is something I still find myself questioning.

I have no reason to doubt the acting prowess of Helen Mirren, and she likely earned her Oscar given her sheer talent (though I haven't actually sat down to watch the film yet—I'll have to consider that possibility). However, I cannot shake the nagging thought that she essentially cast a vote for herself. As an Academy member, she openly remarked that she would never forgive herself if she missed out on the Oscar, and it's quite possible that her own vote was the deciding factor in her victory.
Truly appalling.

The film was absolutely superb. I actually went into it without having any clue what the plot was even about; I simply saw the title and recognized it was an Almodovar piece. It turned out to be a brilliant decision. There is something to be said for approaching cinema without any preconceived notions or having your brain cluttered by a sea of reviews and conflicting opinions—it allows you to experience the work in its purest form.
I have always had a soft spot for that signature Almodovar touch—that specific blend of genuine surprise and a healthy dose of the bizarre.
Penelope was wonderful; frankly, I think she deserves an Oscar.
She certainly outshines that "queen" character.
