California really ought to be its own independent state, especially since the people living there are the ones making the call.
Besides, it’s easily one of the wealthiest regions in the entire country, so they definitely have the resources to pull it off. You’ve got the public support and a massive economy to back it up. Of course, the central government in Washington, D.C. isn't going to just sit back and let that happen—much like how they won't give Chicago any real autonomy.
I suppose as long as the world keeps turning, we're always going to see some form of injustice.

I get these sweaty palms, and honestly, it’s most awkward when I have to go in for a handshake with someone else.🙂 It’s such a pain.
