Brain CT scan in Health ·
Thanks for all the input, everyone.
It turns out my gut feeling was pretty much spot on—it’s really not as bad as I feared.

So, I’m asking for my mom. She’s 48 right now.
She recently had a CT scan, and she’s spiraling a bit because of this mention of "cortical atrophy." I’m trying my best to keep her spirits up—basically trying to convince her that it isn't some massive red flag and that things like this can just be a part of getting older. For what it's worth, there’s absolutely no family history of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or multiple sclerosis in our lineage.

I did some digging and found out that this kind of thing can actually be linked to depression or menopause, and yeah, it's also pretty common as people age.
The problem is, I am struggling to find a solid medical explanation that isn't written in total doctor-speak. I just need someone to translate these results into plain, everyday English.

Does anyone here know how to make sense of this CT report:

CEO: Severe depression
Brain CT performed:

On the scans, the infra- and supratentorial brain matter density looks completely normal.
The IV, III, and lateral ventricles are all fine—normal position, shape, and width.
The sulci on the cerebral convexity are deeper, especially in the bilateral frontal areas.

CONCLUSION/
The brain CT indicates early cortical atrophy, particularly in the bilateral frontal regions.

I’m trying to figure out where I can actually find some real info on "early cortical atrophy of the cerebral cortex." What does that even mean in plain English? Is there a way to prevent it, or maybe just slow it down—and if so, how? I've been digging around online, but everything I find feels super vague and doesn't really hit the mark.

If anyone has some helpful links or actual resources, please let me know. Thanks!
