As far as I know, I don't have diabetes or any other kind of blood sugar issues.

Regarding medication, I'm only taking Pentas (and I just started Sortis recently, though they actually caught my low eGFR before I began that).

I'm honestly not quite sure what they mean by being "dehydrated." If that just means I wasn't drinking enough water or fluids before my blood work, then I suppose that’s possible—I had my blood drawn right in the middle of a massive summer heatwave, and I hadn't been sipping on much water beforehand. But, I went back for another blood test later (after making a real effort to stay hydrated), and the level is still sitting low at 59.

Sometimes it feels like I'm urinating way more than the amount of fluid I'm actually consuming, so I can't help but wonder where all that liquid is coming from. I guess I'm wondering if this might be some sort of sign of a kidney issue? Also, my left ankle tends to swell up every once in a while.
Over my last few measurements, I've noticed my eGFR has dropped down to about 58 - 59. It’s a bit concerning because just a few years ago, it was sitting much higher, around 80 - 82.

I am 49 years old.

Here are the rest of my results:

24-hour urine protein: 0.11 (ref. 0.05 - 0.08)
urea: 5.2 (ref. 2.8 - 8.3)
uric acid: 230 (ref. 134 - 337)
creatinine: 97 (ref. 49 - 90)
24-hour urine creatinine: 9913 (ref. 5900 - 14000)
creatinine clearance: 72 (ref. 50 - 102).

I guess I'm wondering, why would the eGFR be this low?

And is there any way it might be possible to raise it back up?

Thanks.

It feels like everyone is just lurking online anyway. 🙄💩

Hey, thanks for that.

I mean, I noticed some school districts in other states have already requested permission to operate normally, so that's why I'm asking.

So, I guess it actually is possible 😁.

Also, is there any way to see the specific data on how many kids are currently infected—you know, specifically within a single school district here in the US?

I was wondering, are all the schools in Washington, D.C. just defaulting to online classes right now, or can individual schools actually request an exception and switch back to in-person learning if their specific local situation allows for it?

Will I get an email notification about a positive test result (or is there some other way people get notified)? I’m not talking about a household member here—it’s actually a contact from work.

I guess it all depends on whether the person who tested positive actually flagged me as a close contact.

Is there any way to check or find this out somewhere, like through a government portal or something similar?

What’s the actual relationship between getting vaccinated and having to quarantine?

I received my first dose of the vaccine 9 days ago, but I ended up coming into contact with someone who was positive on the 3rd and 4th day after that first shot.

To wrap things up, my last contact with the infected individual was about 5 days ago.

Does someone who has only had one dose still need to go into isolation?

And obviously, I'm hoping for a negative test. 👍

Best,

Oh man, those are some beautifully put words right there.

I suppose that in normal times, I might just leave my kid at home to rest up until things settled down on their own, but given how crazy everything is lately—especially considering all the other kids in the class—we're definitely going to take her in for testing just to be absolutely certain.

My child (upper elementary schooler) has been dealing with symptoms for about 4 days now: general malaise, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, and occasional diarrhea. They’ve had intermittent low-grade fevers around 99°F.

As far as I can tell, their sense of smell is still intact.

They’re heading in for testing this Wednesday, but we won't actually have the results until Friday.

How long does a kid need to stay in isolation? Is it three days after the last fever breaks, or maybe from the onset of the last symptom, or is it a full 10 days from when everything started (since I guess they might not be contagious anymore by then 😵)?

What is the standard protocol for everyone else in the household if the test comes back positive?

How long would the rest of us need to self-isolate—assuming we either develop symptoms or don't?

When exactly does that countdown start?

Thanks.
Maria Fisher46 said:Dear Ma'am,

Based on these results, the underlying cause of the symptoms you're describing isn't immediately clear. It seems unlikely that your thyroid is the culprit behind the hair loss and scalp issues, although your TSH levels are certainly creeping toward the upper limit of the normal range.

The lab work does indicate some gastrointestinal bleeding, which is likely linked to the mild anemia present in your results. The hemorrhoids you mentioned could very well be the source, but you really need to follow up with the gastroenterologist you were referred to. I suspect your dermatologist also recommended checking your hormone levels, as an imbalance in sex hormones can frequently be tied to both hair thinning and various scalp concerns.

Thank you so much for your response!

That’s correct, I went ahead and had my hormone levels checked as well:

Total Testosterone 1.3 nmol/L (0.4 - 1.9)
Free Testosterone 8.4 pmol/L (3.5 - 30)
Free Androgen Index 0.6 % (0.5 - 8.0)
SHBG 132 nmol/L (15 - 120)
Androstenedione 8.6 nmol/L (1 - 12)
DHEA-S 1.3 pmol/L (2-10)

If I may ask one more thing:

For several years now, my MCHC, MCV, and MCH levels have been low, while my RDW has been slightly elevated. What might that point toward?

Thank you so much for your help!
I actually ended up running these tests because my dermatologist recommended them; I've been dealing with some pretty intense hair thinning and scalp soreness lately. Since they suspected anemia might be part of the issue, they sent me off for three rounds of blood cultures and an appointment with a gastroenterologist.
I would be so grateful if someone could please take a look at my lab results and offer some insight.

I also experience occasional heart palpitations.

Why might my heart be racing like this? And how can I stop the bleeding?

Thank you so much.

... and even if the jamming happened because something shifted out of alignment, how on earth do I reset everything back to its original position 😁?

Thanks.

But how can you actually tell if a nerve is inflamed or just pinched?

My own gut feeling is that it might be pinched—since there's this constant, dull sensation in my lower right side—but then it flares up periodically with actual pain, so I'm not entirely sure if I'm reading the signs correctly🤷...

What exactly is the difference between a pinched nerve and nerve inflammation?

Yes, I finally got the disc with my results, so I’m going to follow up with them.

To be honest, the physiatrist actually mentioned it was only about 3 or 4 mm, so I guess I shouldn't be panicking since even Usain Bolt has a protrusion of 9 mm 😁.

What I meant to say is that this protrusion has clearly been there for a while now; I've only been dealing with these specific issues for the last month or so, so I'm really hoping that isn't what's causing everything—but then again, who knows...

So far, I haven't started any actual exercises yet. It's just been electrical stimulation on my upper back, some massage, and manual therapy (which has been absolutely wonderful 😁).

They told me not to start any exercises just yet...

Oh, thank you so much!

I feel a little bit 😁 more at ease now...

I was working at Holy Spirit... and I guess some doctor from general practice was mumbling something about my results being slightly incomplete... though I honestly have no idea what they meant...

And hopefully, that protrusion isn't actually a major issue since they didn't even measure it 😁...

Anyway, if anyone else has any thoughts or comments, please feel free to reach out...

Thanks for getting back to me.

It would honestly be such a relief if this therapy actually worked...

I know it’s a tough question to ask, but do you have any idea how long this f*****g nerve pain might last 😁?

I can't help but feel like I'm somehow aggravating the nerve myself through certain movements or something 🤷, because things will be quiet for a couple of days, and then the pain just flares right back up in this endless cycle...

Is that even normal?

I mean, it feels like something shifted inside me, but I just have no clue what it could be...

Alright.

About a month and a half ago, I lifted this heavy box in my apartment—and of course, I lifted it with my back instead of squatting properly.

The very next day, I made one awkward movement and everything just seized up on me.

I honestly can't tell which specific incident triggered all these current issues.

Since then, I've been dealing with a rotating cast of symptoms: tingling in both legs, shooting pains through the right side of my glute and down my leg, and a dull ache in my lower right back—it feels like some nerve is being pinched somewhere.

The symptoms are so inconsistent; there are days when I barely feel anything at all, but then there are days where the pain is absolutely maddening (and I really don't want to be popping Ibuprofen constantly).

For the last few nights, my sleep has been pretty terrible because I just can't find a single position that doesn't hurt.

What am I looking at here, guys?

Does anyone have an idea of what might be compressing the nerve and how to fix it, because the pain is driving me freaking insane?

This is all totally new to me.

Regarding my medical reports: I had an MRI of my lumbar spine and I've started seeing a specialist privately for therapy.

The MRI report says: The MRI of the lumbar spine in sagittal and transverse projections using T1 and T2 weighted imaging shows a mild leftward scoliosis of the lumbar spine along with a straightened physiological lumbar lordosis.

Degenerative disc changes are visible at the L4-L5 segment, involving the endplates of the vertebrae.

On the T1 and T2 weighted transverse sections, there is a dorso-medial disc protrusion at the L4-L5 segment, which extends bilaterally, more so on the right.
There are no signs of disc herniation in the other segments.

The visualized TH-L spinal cord shows normal physiological signal intensity.

It worries me because the symptoms seem to subside for a bit, only to flare up again, and I have no clue what triggers them. I’m avoiding lifting anything heavy and trying my best not to make any sudden movements.

I realize I have a disc protrusion. My physiatrist mentioned that it’s likely been there for quite a while (meaning it didn't just pop up from lifting that box).

Is it possible that lifting that damn box caused something else to shift, which is now putting pressure on the nerve?

How can I know for sure what exactly is causing the compression?

What should my next move be?

My primary care doctor seems pretty indifferent about it; she basically just told me that this is normal and that it takes a long time to heal...

Okay, I get that I need to do exercises.

But who can point me toward reliable exercises? (I really don't want to mess myself up even further).

Help, please, because I'm totally out of my element here...

I am definitely not going to a chiropractor.

Thanks.
