So I'm supposed to stay wide awake while I'm trying to sleep? Are you kidding me right now? What kind of side effects are we even talking about here? Like, am I just going to deal with total insomnia? 🙂
What’s it actually like when you know a ton about philosophy and how things work? I mean, I’m curious how you all feel as people, since you’ve been deep in the philosophy game for years now. Have you actually found what you were looking for? What kind of headspace does it put you in—how does a person even function once they know so much? How do you deal with everyday life in "normal," average society among people who don't think this way? Do you just see everything through a different lens? 😁
Since I haven't quite reached that level yet, I guess I wonder if diving deeper into philosophical thought is going to change me significantly down the road. I’m just really curious about what happens when you know so much, especially when you can take these ideas that seem incredibly complex to everyone else (kind of like my own thoughts) and you suddenly have the explanation right there in front of you.
Man, it’s absolute truth. If I have to jump through hoops just to find what I'm looking for, then what's even the point of all this overthinking? I mean, seriously. If anyone actually tracks down exactly what I'm after, just let me know. There's a prize on the line—a custom knife set.
klimakos said:It would only be the truth if he actually had to do something about it. Don't let them get in your head. I mean, what can you even say? You just assume... you're right, even when you're probably wrong!
😉
Man. Why didn't anyone tell me this sooner? Seriously, you have no idea how much easier you just made my life. I think I actually knew this the whole time, I just couldn't quite wrap my brain around what you were saying. Thanks, 👍 🙂
Look, I’m just laying out my own take here, and honestly, I think it’s pretty much the right way to look at things. But hey, maybe I'm wrong. I'm mostly just trying to make sense of it all for myself. If I stick to my theory, I can probably shoot down any argument you guys throw at me to prove me wrong. Then again, who am I to tell anyone what’s right? At the end of the day, everything just boils down to the core beliefs we’ve picked up over the years. Perspectives shift, everyone sees things through a different lens, and there’s really no point in trying to convince someone else they're wrong when it’s all just a matter of personal conviction anyway. God, I’m such a know-it-all sometimes...
Honestly, nobody has given me a straight answer yet. Most people just drone on about this supposedly "incomprehensible" consciousness that we’re all products of, acting like we're all just actors in some play. So, who’s actually kidding themselves here? Why can't you just say, "I don't know what's happening to me"? Instead, everyone keeps pulling these theories out of thin air, and where does that even lead? Just blind faith and self-delusion. I mean, shouldn't an enlightened person be someone who sees things exactly as they are, rather than drifting into extremes and lying to themselves with some belief system? That's how I see it, anyway. Maybe I'm just overthinking things and getting myself tangled up in my own head, but from what I've gathered so far, that's just a path to nowhere. And that path always ends in a total disaster for me. Right now, a hundred different thoughts just hit me at once, I went overboard, and I ended up with nothing. Then everything I just said feels useless... But no, I'm not buying into those ideas; I'm sticking to my original thought and what it covers.
Isn't that kind of thinking exactly what separates a madman from a rational person? Is madness even allowed in philosophy?
Where does this line of reasoning go—jumping from one conclusion about the incomprehensible to another? Everything is beyond our level of awareness, so isn't it all just pure guesswork? I'd call it foolish... It all sounds pretty stupid to me. I don't know... Maybe I'm not worthy of saying this since I haven't read much and I'm new to philosophy, so I'll just ask: Isn't any philosophy that wanders away from the material world just shouting into the void?
I don't even know how to name it... The material world, our dimension, our perception of the world we've lived in since the day we were born...
grizli said:Purpose is just something "you" create. One person is out there hunting for meaning, while someone else just sees a bunch of words on a page.🙂
Fine, let's say purpose doesn't exist. At the end of the day, it's all just other people's opinions anyway. I guess I've lost interest in playing philosopher since it isn't actually giving me the answers I'm looking for. 👎 Screw philosophy. 🙂
Here we go. A textbook example of what happens when everyone just shouts their own opinion into the void, thinking they're both right and wrong at the same time. I mean, what’s even the point of any of this?
Twenty years. Honestly, the worst part is that I haven't actually sat down to read any philosophy texts or even a single book; instead, everything just kind of drifts my way naturally from you guys here. It's pretty sick, if you think about it. 🙂
You haven't proven a single thing to me. I mean, what am I even supposed to get out of being stuck in this system? Let me put it this way. Is it better to just stick to scientific facts and live according to how nature actually works, or should I spend my life philosophizing just to try and find some "truth," only to realize in the end that there is no such thing because everything is just too complicated and purely theoretical? All your guesses are both right and wrong at the same time; we’re never actually going to find the truth people are looking for. That’s just how I see it. I think I'll go with the first option, and maybe use philosophy as just some random distraction on the side.
Anyway... I've realized that most of you guys sitting here philosophizing live with this conviction that everything is just the Matrix and that consciousness is this big thing, blah blah blah. To me, it just seems silly. I get where you're coming from, I really do, but it all feels like just another form of belief to me. In the end, I'm basically equating philosophy with religion. But whatever, who cares? Everyone is right and everyone is wrong. Philosophy doesn't follow any actual laws. So, nobody can tell me my beliefs are wrong, just like I can't tell anyone else they're wrong.
Man, I am totally lost. Is it even possible to debunk every single claim... does right and wrong even exist? Ugh... philosophy is starting to turn me off. Right now, it feels like nothing more than a word game. I'm going to turn my attention to much more interesting things in life. Philosophy is just leading me toward a dead end and pulling me away from the real path.
All this stuff you guys are debating? Honestly, it feels about as useful as someone trying to convince me we’re living in the Matrix. I mean, is there even a real answer out there, or is everything just a matter of faith at this point? I don't know anymore. Everything feels like it's just falling apart. I'm honestly losing my faith in philosophy altogether. I guess you should just try to live like a normal person instead of acting like some deep-thinking philosopher. Right now, I think that might be the only way to actually deal with it.
Look, I don't know. But who actually has the receipts to back up what you just said? To me, it all sounds like nothing more than a theory... a theory that just happened to come from some actor. I mean, how can he—someone who is stuck right in the middle of all this—claim to know anything about what’s happening on the outside, when he can't even get out himself? To break free, to actually wake up. Or maybe he can?
Elizabeth Miller8 said:Maybe try figuring out where you actually are right now and who you even are first. If you get that down, I guess solving the whole "where am I when I'm asleep" thing will be easy. You might even start wondering if you’re even awake when you aren't sleeping. 👋
Honestly, I think asking yourself stuff like that is just plain stupid. There isn't a real answer out there. Anything anyone gives you is just pure guesswork. I feel like you really need to set some boundaries with philosophy. But, I don't know, right now I'm actually kind of curious about what happens when I sleep...
Jonathan Brooks8 said:There isn't really a huge difference between when I'm asleep and when I'm awake, except that when I'm awake, my attention just drifts way more... you know, like Java and all those other... things... 😉 😁
Oh, please. What do you mean there's no difference? Honestly, it feels like most of you have convinced yourselves you understand God, but you don't have a clue what you're even talking about. It seems incomprehensible to me, and everyone is just drifting further away from who they actually are. Maybe I've lost the plot too, but I still don't get this whole thing about sleeping. Obviously, there's no consciousness there. Well, maybe there is, but nobody can actually claim that, because that would just be stupid and impossible to wrap your head around.
Honestly, I didn't really get much out of that answer either. It leaves me wondering... where does that consciousness actually go? Is it mine, or is it something else entirely?
Where does my consciousness actually go when I'm asleep? Like, am I even alive while I'm out? Do I still have a soul during those hours? Where does the "me" part of me just vanish to? But then again, I’m always still me. If I can't remember a single REM cycle or any of my dreams... then I guess I don't really sleep. I just go to bed and then suddenly wake up and I'm myself again. It feels like it happens in an instant—well, maybe not a second, but in that tiny fraction of a moment where I lie down and then immediately I'm getting up from the bed. Is there some kind of jump between hitting the pillow and my consciousness waking back up? Does my awareness just shut off for a bit, or does it reset, or maybe it stays on the whole time? My clock shows eight hours have passed since I went to sleep, but all I can remember is that last REM phase. Am I even conscious during REM? I mean, I guess my consciousness has to shut off if I believe that time actually exists—like, the idea that this world keeps moving even when I'm not spiritually present... I have zero clue what happened while I was sleeping. No images, no memories, nothing. Where was I?

So you're the one who gets to decide which people are necessary and which ones aren't?
Bravo. Honestly, you might as well just start reading palms or something. Maybe while you're at it, you could tell me everything that's going to happen to me in life since you clearly have it all figured out. If you know everything already, I assume you can predict the future too.
