How can Catholics celebrate masquerades?

Doesn't this bother you too? Don't you think our institutions should be stepping up to protect individuals and doing everything possible to make sure no one ever feels this way again?

It would be really interesting to see the official numbers, especially if they tracked them throughout the entire year.
Around Christmas, people flock to our local parish church—it gets so crowded you can barely drive past because of all the cars parked on the street.😁 Personally, I only know three families who actually attend regularly every single Sunday.
Most other people just show up for the big holidays like Christmas and Easter.

I was wondering if there’s any data available on how many people attend Mass on Sundays at least semi-regularly?

I mean, sure, it’s easy enough to shuffle one kid into a hallway or tuck two into a classroom where they have religion studies. But trying to find a spot for three? That's getting complicated, not to mention the other issues.
We’re seeing more kids skipping out on these classes here too, and it definitely shows in how they act. Since the teacher is honestly wonderful, I'm sure she'd find a way to make things work for just one student, but this way is definitely easier on her, too.

I have to agree with you. A huge part of the issue is parents who just go through the motions and enroll their kids in religious education classes when they don't actually want them there. I won't get into how that affects their upbringing, since we're talking about curriculum here rather than parenting, but it provides a really skewed perspective. It's easy to overlook a couple of kids in a class, but when you have five, six, or seven of them in every single grade, the whole dynamic changes.
That doesn't excuse the school districts from their responsibility—they should be looking out for every single child—but there's no denying that many parents are contributing to the problem.

But honestly, this is a much bigger deal and a far more passionate issue than people actually realize, yet it barely gets any attention.

The lack of secularism shows up more in how other subjects are taught than in the mere existence of religious studies, even when they're squeezed into the middle of a class period.

If a professor happened to call out sick and we had a gap in our schedule—which was basically the only time we ever had free time during our entire schooling—someone was always stuck in the classroom with us. We were never allowed to just wander off or be left alone in the room.

Do you not see this as an issue for your own kids at their school, or are you claiming it isn't a problem for students in other districts either?

The majority voted for the Republican Party, so the Republican Party is running things....
The majority identified as Catholic, so we’re a Catholic nation.....

Besides, people have choices.... nobody is forcing anyone to be Catholic or show up to Sunday school.....

Go ahead, try to name one single country where religion and politics aren't completely intertwined.....

No, I don't think you quite understood my point 🙂
If it's okay for religious instruction to be in schools and take up middle-of-the-day class time just "because the majority identifies as Catholic," then is it also okay for state laws to prohibit things that are forbidden to Catholics?
Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·
So, shadowcrane91, do you really think it’s okay to bake Catholic values into laws that apply to everyone?
Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·
I know I'm playing devil's advocate here, but the law is technically on their side. It’s a literal interpretation rather than the spirit of the rule, but I guess that's just how it goes. 😁

Just to confirm, I didn't take religion classes back in 1993 🙂

The chair should have been the one talking, not the person sitting in it 😂

Jokes aside, this could have been a really solid starting point for tackling the issue of getting free childcare for teachers

Smart 😂

I wouldn't want my kid sitting through religion classes either, whether it's Catholic or Muslim, but looking at this thread, did the student even show up to class? Or am I misreading things?

Robert Rodriguez9 said:Why would a high school even allow that? The district doesn't pay the staff—the state does. If they want to pay for extra hours, they can deal with it themselves since they already signed that agreement. Right now, everything is strictly voluntary.

I'm with Richard Fowler13 on this one. 👍 A friend of mine has a kid who had this exact same teacher, and she can't say enough good things about him.

I agree completely. The Department of Education needs to step in and mandate that whoever is responsible for these kids signs an employment contract amendment so they can finally get paid properly.

I still feel like I'm missing way too much information to decide if she's actually right or not😁
Regardless of who's in the right, I think they both went a little overboard

I’m a little confused about whether they’re in a free period or if this is actually religious studies class. It’s also not clear to me if the librarian and the school agreed at the start of the year to let the kids hang out in the library or what.

The guy is just being blunt and assertive, and honestly, he's right to refuse to work for free.
