Indeed, those who can sleep on 5 mg of Valium are the truly fortunate ones. I struggle with insomnia myself, though I grew accustomed to these hypnotics quite some time ago. Earlier this year, my psychiatrist switched my Valium 10 mg over to Dormicum; while thank God I can actually fall asleep, I find myself waking up several times throughout the night and feeling completely exhausted by morning. It feels as though my mind simply won't shut off. I have heard it suggested that sleep patterns eventually stabilize, implying we will only achieve normal rest once we approach true "recovery." When I expressed these concerns to my doctor, she emphasized twice that the most critical factor is being able to stay asleep through the night. During particularly difficult periods, I have been tempted to take two Dormicum tablets at once, but I hesitate—not out of fear of a physical reaction, but because of the risk of dependency. I even consulted a friend of mine who is a psychiatrist to get her perspective, and I will quote her here: As a hypnotic, one could consider a small evening dose of Zyprexa (2.5 mg) or perhaps 25 mg of Prazosin (which helps lower blood pressure). This is merely a suggestion, however, as any actual treatment must be determined during an in-person consultation.

There is absolutely no reason to feel embarrassed discussing this with your psychiatrist; they are well aware that suppressed libido is a standard side effect of these medications. Of course, the effectiveness depends entirely on your specific prescription and dosage.
For me, it’s completely non-existent.

I appreciate both of you. I think I will bring this up during my next appointment. You are right—she will be the best person to evaluate the pharmacological interactions at play here. While many of us deal with a decreased libido, I suspect if the Wellbutrin option truly works as intended, it would be a standard part of therapy for most of us. At least for those who find this particular side effect to be a significant issue.

I am aware there is already a dedicated thread regarding libido and antidepressants, but it feels like the discussion here tends to lean heavily toward the pharmacological side of things. I recently came across some information on various American forums suggesting that if you’re struggling with low libido due to your medication, adding a lower dose of Wellbutrin might help. Apparently, it works in about half of the cases people report. Has anyone here actually tried this approach? To be honest, I feel a bit awkward bringing this up with my psychiatrist; I have this nagging feeling that Wellbutrin might not be the best fit since my primary diagnosis is an anxiety disorder and Panic Disorder, rather than clinical depression. If any of you have navigated this personally, please share your experience. That said, I know that libido usually stabilizes after a month or two once the body adjusts, so it's likely just a matter of time.

I took Zoloft for a week and felt absolutely nothing, it was like drinking water.
I was on Prozac for a month. It made me so wired, I was nervous and hypomanic, so they cut me off.

To make you feel better, hitting the right therapy right away is damn near impossible.
I've cycled through almost every antidepressant in the SSRI group.
I've even done small doses of antipsychotics.
Right now I'm on Anafranil, Aurora, and Seroquel. That combo mostly keeps me calm. Seroquel was working pretty well for me, but lately things have taken a bit of a turn for the worse.
I can function at work, but at home, I'm a total wreck.

I know, it feels like there is so much left to adjust. I’ve recently started taking Effexor and I am sleeping far too much, though perhaps that is simply because I was losing my mind while on Effexor previously, and now I am overcompensating (especially since Effexor isn't a sedative and people typically struggle with insomnia, so maybe I'm just oversleeping during the day due to anxiety). Honestly, I don't have the energy to change anything else; I've had enough upheaval. I am glad if older generation antidepressants work for you, but I read somewhere that what I am dealing with (mainly depression plus anxiety) is usually resolved with SSRIs.

Furthermore, this should be considered a significant advantage.🙂

To provide some context, I found that Elicea (Lexapro) was losing its efficacy. I transitioned to Effexor for the last three and a half weeks, but the experience was harrowing; I felt a sensation akin to being on ecstasy, and Calixta would leave me feeling completely crashed and lethargic. Now, I have been prescribed Fevarin. It is worth noting that yesterday was only my second time taking a half-dose (50 mg) in the evening. However, I am struggling significantly because that same ecstasy-like sensation returns after ingestion, making it impossible to sleep soundly even with the aid of hypnotics—much like what occurred with the Effexor. While this might simply be a side effect, it feels counterintuitive that I was prescribed Fevarin specifically to avoid such sensations, yet here I am taking it at night only to feel wired and sleep-deprived during the day. I am quite uncertain. Has anyone else experienced this heightened state on Fevarin only to have it subside? I honestly don't have the mental fortitude left to switch ADs again. It seems as though other options, like Zoloft or Prozac, might actually be more stimulating, leaving me wondering what is left to try.

Oh, and for clarity, I don't necessarily suffer from clinical depression—perhaps just a slight amount—but I definitely deal with anxiety.
