What should I get for a godparent gift at a Baptism? in Students & Teens ·
Daniel Alvarez13 said:What? I'm the problem? Look, I agreed to be the godfather—I laid out exactly how I view the whole role. It’s not just about showing up, buying some overpriced gift, and calling it a day. To me, being a godfather means being that reliable safety net for the kid—someone they can turn to when things get messy or if they need to talk about something they aren't ready to bring to their parents. Basically, I'm an extra set of hands for the parents while the kid is little, and hopefully, a lifelong friend as they grow up. But instead, it went the complete opposite way. I gave the kid a gift, and almost immediately after the ceremony, everything just evaporated. No more good vibes, no more talking—nothing. Not from the kid, and not from his parents either. So what am I supposed to do? Beg them for a conversation to explain why this behavior is trash? Yeah, right... As if. To top it all off, his parents actually admitted they wanted someone else entirely, but since the boy insisted on me, they just rolled with it. Maybe I *am* the problem, but I'm certainly not wasting my breath trying to convince people they're wrong—especially them. That's just a losing battle.

The issue is you'll ditch your own principles just to please everyone else.
I won't elaborate further. ☕

Look, my excuse is simple: I’m not about to waste my breath trying to explain life to some 14-year-old kid who hasn't even hit puberty yet—he probably wouldn't get half of it anyway. Besides, it's not my business to step in and play parent to someone else's kid, no matter how much of a disaster he might be. And let's get one thing straight—I didn't blow my life because of a little extra cash. I knew exactly how this whole mess was going to end from the very beginning.

It's pretty obvious this isn't actually about some kid failing to understand, his parents' parenting style, or your bank account. This is about you and your role as a friend.

You messed up when you took the path of least resistance to satisfy some kid's whim, instead of standing your ground and giving what you actually thought was appropriate.

He’s still just a kid being raised by pretty clueless parents. What’s your excuse?

Daniel Alvarez13 said:Look, I’ve been around the block enough to know what being a godfather actually means. A few years back, this little kid—smart kid, really—asked me to be his godfather. We were tight back then; he was bright, I got along great with his parents, so I figured, why not? No big deal. Then came the question about the gift. He asks for a laptop. I thought, okay, sure—even though it’s a massive ask and definitely not "budget-friendly," but hey, I asked the question, so whatever. Anyway, the kid starts listing off specific specs like he’s some tech reviewer—this model, that processor, all that jazz. I told him, "Kiddo, that’s a bit out of my league." So, his parents chime in, saying if it’s too much for me, they’ll chip in the difference. Honestly? I should have told them where to shove it, but I didn't. I bought the exact machine he wanted, handled everything, and you know what? Now we aren't even close. The kid doesn't reach out, I send him a text for his birthday, New Year's, Christmas, Easter—that's it. It's wild how many kids are just like that nowadays. And get this: the laptop cost me roughly $1.75, and he managed to break it in less than six months.

And don't even get me started on godparents...🤦

EDIT: My kid is graduating high school this year. I organized a late-night hike to a local shrine with the priest, bringing guitars, music, and prayer. The kids are actually pretty hyped for it. 😉

I’m entering my third year on treatment for allergic asthma. I had testing done two years ago, which confirmed allergies to low grasses. For the first two years, everything was perfectly under control.

But this year, a nasty cough and chest pain hit me out of nowhere. It lasted about ten days—constant coughing fits, especially brutal ones at night, wheezing, and lung pain. I was prescribed an antibiotic, which cleared up the initial infection, but those nighttime coughing fits haven't left. They've evolved into what I suspect are actual asthma attacks (which I’ve never experienced before).

Basically, I wake up with my airways spasming. I can't breathe. I try to force air through, but nothing happens. During the struggle, I end up swallowing air, barely manage to get my Ventolin in, and then need several minutes just to stabilize.

I have an appointment scheduled with my Pulmonologist, but it isn't for another ten days. Honestly, I'm starting to get worried because last night's attack was severe; for a second there, I genuinely thought I was going to suffocate.

What do you all do when things get like this? Should I wait for my doctor's appointment, or should I be doing something else?

Don't sit around waiting for your pulmonologist. Call your primary care doctor instead.
Singulair helps with allergic asthma, and your regular doctor can prescribe it without needing a specialist's sign-off first.
