All-day school schedules in Students & Teens ·

Since I'm working from home, I feel like I always have one kid who just seems to struggle through school until they're practically nineteen.

But it didn't just start out this way.

So I know this software engineer guy—total high earner, even though he’s basically living the remote life. He doesn't just grind out a standard eight-hour shift; he’s more of a "whenever it needs doing" type, working late nights or popping in on weekends when things get hectic.

His wife was on a temporary contract, but she's actually between jobs right now.
They’ve got two little kids—one of them is just... wow, a total prodigy, super bright—and the other one is just your typical, run-of-the-mill kid. Nothing crazy, they don't need any special extra help or anything.

And now? Now both parents are stuck at home while it's freezing outside—it's December, middle of the night around 5 AM vibes—and the kids are just stuck sitting in school until 5 PM.

Seriously, who even came up with this nonsense? 🙏
Maybe someone here knows what's up.
So, last year I was at an outpatient clinic at one of our local hospitals...
I need to go in for a follow-up, right? But the doctor can't issue me a new referral because her system shows I still have an active one—apparently valid until mid-February, probably some 365-day rule thing. But then the hospital staff is breathing down my neck demanding a *different* referral, and they won't even give me an appointment for my check-up without it. It's such a mess...

What am I supposed to do about this? 🤔

Hey rapidharbor9, I’ve got some killer news for you 👍

Seriously, man... it’s all worth it. Every bit of it.

If those bills from back in 2002 are still in decent shape—I mean really good condition—you could probably flip them for triple what they're worth. They’re total collector's items now, real rarities... honestly, they might even jump in value even more down the road.

Just go ahead and scope out some listings online.

I work and live in one place, but on paper, I'm registered somewhere else.
The official recommendation is to register your temporary residence through the government portal so you can actually move between where you live and where you're officially registered. But registering a temporary stay is impossible right now because the police are only handling emergencies.🤦 It’s like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
Easter is coming up, and I want to go visit my family at my permanent address. I'll probably make the trip there, but then I won't be able to get back to where I actually live and work because I don't have a permit. There's no way for me to get one, and I can't even register my current residence.
I honestly don't know who's crazier here.

If you can't work from home, there isn't really a fix until the registration system actually starts working properly.
Maybe try making up some other third-party reasons? Might stick. Just keep bugging them. Ask three times—you never know how much they'll push back.

Adam Collins4 said:Look, I don't quite get it... everyone lately has been complaining about the system, which—let's be clear—is far from perfect...

But these situations where spouses are registered at different addresses? That's always been a mystery to me...

I guess I'm the only idiot who went through the hassle of updating every single document for the entire family when we moved... and the kicker is, we only moved two house numbers away because we built a new place on the same street...

And now people are either terrified or just venting...

That's actually pretty good. 👍Sometimes you show these great qualities, and then other times, you've got a seriously short fuse.
Tyler Morales2 said:How long did you guys have to wait to get yours? Were you specifically hunting for a one-month turnaround, or is that just whatever they decide on?

It took me like two days tops.
First I send them the form, then my ID, and the date that actually works for me. I need it done in a day because I don't want to be playing games or abusing the system...
I just picked a date, and that's exactly what they confirmed.

rustywalker42 said:Honestly, this is pathetic—grown adults actually getting excited over permits.

Are we living in a concentration camp or something?

No, but things are seriously messed up right now—it’s like "maybe, maybe not" everywhere you look.
I left my family's place just hours before the earthquake hit, so naturally, I didn't grab everything I actually needed. I can manage for two weeks, but I am definitely NOT set for two months...

But hey, I can handle it now, so I'm happy. It's a small win, but it counts. 🙂

Two different local emergency offices told me "only childcare or elderly care counts as a valid reason." I pretty much tore one of them a new one.

Please let me know if you pull it off; I'm genuinely curious.

Got mine. 🎉

I listed stuff like apartment inspections, checking utility lines, notifying the landlord, bringing my own tools, and all that good stuff. It's all legit, obviously.

Small town, just outside Washington, D.C. The permit works for the whole D.C. area. Got it approved within 48 hours.
So, if you listen to what some guy over on that other thread is saying, it sounds like getting a permit isn't actually that big of a deal everywhere.

It’s probably just totally random—you know how it is—like, it all depends on who you run into or how lucky you get...

Will do. I just gotta figure out if I even need to ask my boss first.
This is insane. When do they actually plan on loosening these rules up?

rustywalker42 said:So, a Supreme Court Justice claims they're breaking the law. Makes you wonder what happens if you actually ignore them, right?

What's the deal? They slap you with a fine based on what, exactly?

No way am I messing around with the police. They're on edge as it is. ☕
Joshua Gray75 said:That depends entirely on who you're asking.
If you're looking for guidance from the CZ Headquarters—your best bet is to contact your local municipality or city hall. Give them a call or send an email; they surely have the info buried somewhere on their sites. Some places have uploaded a specific form, while others haven't... there isn't really one standardized way to request a travel permit.

Thanks. I see some people actually have them.
I'm trying to get word from FEMA.

God, I hope I can pull this off. I'm just praying they let me swing by my place in Washington, D.C., to grab some work stuff and all the paperwork I need for something...
Do I just need to write a quick note if I'm moving to a different city, or is there an actual official form I gotta find somewhere?

That government website is a total mess—honestly, navigating it is like trying to find your way through a corn maze in the dark.
Fixed it. If anyone’s actually struggling with this, just save your files in that ancient 97-2003 format—you know, the old school stuff—and even a total dinosaur of a computer will recognize them perfectly fine. Everything works... 👍

As for everything else? Well, I guess we’ll just have to wait for things to actually get better...
I managed to snag a dentist right before everything shut down 🙏, but I couldn't track down a repair tech.
Basically, the screen border—the frame itself—is totally wonky. The left side is shifted over by a few inches or something... so the actual display doesn't line up with the laptop body at all.

It was actually working "perfectly" fine for a while. But lately, this past week, the fan has been going absolutely ballistic—it just keeps spinning faster and longer every single day. First it’d blow for like half an hour then chill out, then it was an hour, and now? It can just blast for hours on end.

Since I'm buried in work, a relative lent me this ancient laptop that was just sitting in a corner of their house gathering dust. Only problem is, there's no Microsoft Word on it. It uses some weird RTF program instead. Never even heard of it.

I tried typing something up on that old thing, moved it to a USB drive, then plugged the USB into my overheating machine, and it recognizes and opens everything in Microsoft Word just fine. Is there any chance of doing the opposite? Because, goddammit, it won't recognize my files at all.

What am I supposed to do here?

Are repair shops just closed for good or what? 🕺

Thanks. 👍

I mean, I don't think anyone's actually gonna give a damn if you step out onto your balcony or sit on the front porch—like, go ahead and toss a lounge chair out on the lawn in your backyard... just don't be loitering outside the fence or trying to force an interaction with the neighbors.

That guy driving the tractor? Total overkill. Honestly, instead of just shutting his trap, he’s out there whining and making a whole scene about it.

Quincy:
I mean, I seriously can't even count how many times I got calls from all sorts of government agencies—just making sure I was actually up to speed and knew exactly which hospital to head to, plus checking if they had staff who could actually speak English...

Pretty decent write-up, honestly. Real actual quarantines... 👍

electricsurfer47 said:Quick question about food delivery—do you guys think it's okay to ask them to just leave a pizza or whatever else right at the doorstep or maybe out in the front yard?

Me? I’m planning on cooking... honestly, I don't even want to touch my own damn doorknob.

I mean, I can't be sure about that—just thinking about whoever handled those pizza boxes, you know? They could easily pass something along, and then if I test positive, it's all messed up because of them...🤔

Anyone got tips on what to do with all my trash if I’m stuck in isolation, just me alone in the apartment? Let me know. 👍

I'm not even officially quarantined—don't really need to be—but just being safe, you know? I've got some stuff I gotta deal with over the next few days, things I absolutely have to get done... otherwise, I'm doing alright.

Once I wrap everything up, the plan is to lock myself down for about two weeks, then head out to visit family—it'll be right around Easter by then. Assuming someone can actually come pick me up... if they even let people drive around.

My folks were born in '39 and '42, so they've got those typical "old age" health issues, even though they're still super active.
Just playing it safe.
I can't risk losing them.

I'm thinking about just piling the garbage out on the balcony. 🤔
What else should I be worried about?
Why did Klonka lock the thread on university autonomy? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I honestly feel like this whole issue needs a serious deep dive because, let’s be real, the mods' response was pretty weak—not exactly convincing at all—but hey, I guess I'll just roll with it for now.
Gonna try taking a different angle next time... see if that works better.

Thanks.
Why did Klonka lock the thread on university autonomy? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Alright, I’m asking nicely here—why the hell did my thread on university autonomy get nuked in the politics section? Maybe I should've laid out the opening post with more detail, but I honestly thought most people would get what I was driving at and see the point... so why the sudden, radical shutdown of the whole discussion? Just cutting us all off like that feels extreme...

Is there any chance the mods could show a little mercy and just reopen it? 🤔

Thanks.
MSCT scan in Health ·
My blood pressure is through the roof right now.
I’ve been pumped up with air dozens of times because of all the surgeries I've had... just constant stuff.
Since I can't go near an MRI, I'm stuck getting a CT scan on my kidneys and adrenal glands the day after tomorrow—they didn't say anything about any special prep work though.

So, what am I looking at here? How long does this thing take?
Do I need to follow some weird diet tomorrow?
And should I take my regular meds in the morning before the scan, or just skip them?

There's a lot of radiation involved, but look, I had kidney surgery 27 years ago—dealing with chronic pyelonephritis, hydronephrosis, a massive stone, and they suspect an adrenal adenoma. Honestly, it'll probably do more good than harm at this point...

Thanks.
