For me, the absolute non-negotiable when it comes to work is making sure everything stays strictly by the book. It’s funny, though, because every single time I bring up the importance of following labor laws during a job interview, the entire vibe of the room just shifts instantly, doesn't it? I've been in the workforce for about 18 years now, navigating through roughly 30 different roles, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that money isn't actually my main driver. At this stage in my life, wouldn't you agree that having more free time is worth so much more than a bigger paycheck? Honestly, I would much rather stick to a standard 40-hour week, Monday through Friday, for a set salary, than grind through 12-hour shifts every day just to chase extra overtime pay or per diems.
