Omicron variant in Coronavirus ·
Gerald Chavez7 said:I don't have a major problem with the video link itself, but a quick summary would be helpful.

I listened to a few minutes of it, and it seems he's taking it as a fact that infections in the USA are 4-5 times higher than the official case numbers. That sounds pretty hard to swallow to me—given how much testing goes on in the US, that would imply almost everyone there has already had it.

I don't really follow this guy because his estimates are always way higher than the official data.
To be fair, though, ever since Omicron arrived, both politicians and health officials have been citing numbers that are significantly higher than what's officially confirmed.

I think they might be counting rapid tests too, or am I tripping? I read somewhere that they were, but I can't say for sure

Most of these seem to be Delta. I think I caught something in the news yesterday about Omicron becoming the dominant strain over in London.

Whitty once described the situation as if we were fighting two different pandemics at the exact same time: you had the Delta variant holding steady with about 50,000 new infections a week, all while Omicron was starting to move in.

Given how fast these sirens are going, we’re going to see exactly what happens with hospitalizations very, very soon.
The real issue is that hospitals here in the US are already pushed to their limits, and now we have Omicron to deal with on top of everything else. Just imagine what happens when doctors and nurses start calling in sick because they've caught Omicron themselves? It’s a tough situation.

When that happens, it doesn't just strain the hospitals; it hits primary care and emergency services too, since everyone will need testing regardless of their vaccination status. We're essentially starting from scratch, but with a much heavier wave of sick people hitting us at once.

If you're going to comment, maybe actually watch the video first. 🐔

She's saying their healthcare system isn't overwhelmed because Omicron is a milder disease; most people just recover at home in five days.

Sure, some people will still need hospital care, but what they're seeing in the USA after four weeks of Omicron sirens is a completely different story than what happened with Delta.

Meanwhile, the media over in the USA has been preaching pure apocalypse lately. 🕺

Gerald Chavez7 said:It’s spreading pretty fast in Yosemite (according to preliminary reports, though we might see in a few days if it’s just a fluke) among a very experienced population. At least 70% of people in Yosemite have already dealt with previous variants, so we aren't exactly looking at an "immunologically naive" or "green" population here.

Gerald Chavez7 said:Well, seeing as 0.4% of the population has died, I'd say that's a pretty solid indicator. Let me see if I can dig up the link where I read this...

Oof, that doesn't sound good. :/
