stormystag20 said:Hey everyone. As someone trained in educational psychology, there’s this one specific phenomenon I keep running into, and honestly, I can't find a logical explanation for it. It’s actually starting to get a little creepy. I’ve never been the type to buy into old wives' tales or any of that parapsychology nonsense—I'm a science person through and through—but lately, this has genuinely started to rattle me.

Here is what’s going on:

It’s a bit difficult to put into words, but I’ll give it my best shot.

Have you ever had a problem that’s been weighing on you for days, weeks, or even months? Let me use a mundane example, like a massive Biology final. This exam is huge; it’s the kind of thing that determines whether you pass the year or fail. You’re under immense stress, obsessing over it 24/7... and nobody else knows. No one knows you're struggling or how much prep work you're doing. That part is crucial.

Then, the very next day, you’re grabbing coffee with a friend and, out of nowhere, they mention how much they used to love biology. Later, you’re walking down the street and see a sign for the "American Biological Association" on a building. Then, an ad for "Biological Phenomena" pops up in your Facebook feed. Suddenly, you’re seeing this topic everywhere, even though nobody had mentioned it before.

Is it just a case of heightened focus? Like, because I'm stressed about the subject, my brain is just hyper-tuned to notice anything related to it? I thought that was the answer at first, but this has happened three or four times now with scenarios where the mathematical probability of such a coincidence is incredibly low. I don't think it's just selective attention.

Does this phenomenon have a specific name? Is it some version of the "Law of Attraction" or something similar? Again, I want to emphasize that I am absolutely not someone who gets swept up in paranormal theories, but this is catching me completely off guard.

I honestly don't see why you're making such a huge deal out of this. Do you even realize how much raw data our "database" takes in every single day? Your brain just filters everything based on what matters at that moment. If you're totally obsessed with biology, your brain is going to light up like a Christmas tree every time biology gets mentioned, whereas if you aren't, you might not even register the info at all. To put it another way, if you didn't have a biology exam coming up, you probably wouldn't even remember the topic of your conversation with your buddy or notice a screen displaying the Biological Society logo. It’s nothing spooky or "voodoo," really. Honestly, it feels like we computer geeks understand the brain a lot better than you psychologists do. 😁 (jokee)

You probably haven't heard this, but this "phenomenon" happens all the time with pregnant women. Suddenly, pregnancy becomes their entire universe, so they start noticing—lo and behold—that pregnant women are everywhere. But when they aren't expecting, a pregnant woman is just another random person passing by, and even if they ran into five of them in one afternoon, they wouldn't give it a second thought because, in that moment, the information just isn't relevant.
