Advisor to the mayor of #Mariupol, Pyotr Andryushchenko, said that at least 22 thousand citizens died in #Mariupol during the three months of the war.
It sounds incredibly brutal—and honestly, I wish it weren't true. My brother thinks the number is actually higher, maybe closer to 50,000. To me, that figure feels massive, but then again, I wasn't there—he was out in the field, not tucked away safely in a shelter. I think he’s still dealing with some pretty intense shock and trauma 😢. His theory is that while many were killed in bombings, a huge number likely died from hunger, the freezing cold, lack of medicine, or even suicide. He mentioned that a lot of elderly folks stayed in their apartments because they find it hard to leave, and you just have to wonder how many people were left behind without anyone knowing.
How many people will simply never be found? There are so many who perished in fires or were killed right in their homes before the fires even started. We'll never truly know where so many are buried. Where are the people killed in the Theater? Some who were present believe about a thousand died there, but they’re gone. If the Russians tear down buildings without searching for bodies, everything just gets cleared away with the rubble. Pittsburgh has become a graveyard. They came specifically to wipe the city out.
We'll never get a final count—it's like any war, we can only guess. And this conflict isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
