Obstacles on the tracks in Cycling ·

Every driver knows exactly when pedestrians are supposed to be using the crosswalk. So, it feels less like a rule and more like an excuse for people to go hunting for cyclists. That’s what really bugs me—it's easy enough to deal with red or green lights, but this? Not so much.

As for the congestion around town... man, today I was riding from downtown over to Brooklyn, and I swear I could count at least 50 cars, a construction excavator, a massive semi-truck cruising down Main Street, all kinds of delivery vans—not to mention entire fleets of them. Eventually, I get tired of zig-zagging through the chaos, so I just hop out onto the road. And then, predictably, car drivers start throwing insults about my family. Where did everyone's common sense go...?

Unfortunately, those Bandit lackeys from the Department of Transportation finally scraped it all off. Does anyone actually know what kind of varnish they use for this stuff?

Honestly, you could probably just use a heavy-duty degreaser—or really anything abrasive enough to strip it down—to get rid of whatever mess they left behind.

I mean, seriously, what kind of absolute genius came up with the brilliant idea to sync the pedestrian signal with the bike lane light? The guy who designed this probably got his degree from a clown college—or maybe just a really questionable traffic engineering program somewhere out west.

Yeah, tell me about it. I ignore them too, but the second some guy in an SUV tries to make a turn at the intersection while my light is red, the whole thing turns into a symphony of honking and verbal abuse.

The thing is, he clearly KNOWS that I have just as much right to move as he does in that scenario. Honestly, if we're being technical, he should be the one yielding to me...

Honestly, we just can't catch a break with this route.

And don't even get me started on those traffic lights—they seem to trigger five minutes before the ones for cars. If I actually waited for every single green light, I’d probably spend my entire afternoon just trying to get from Selski to Skorpi.
Best route to Mount Rainier? in Cycling ·
Gregory Miller4 said:Look, I’m not actually from Washington, D.C., so right now I’m basically just playing trial and error with Google Maps to try and stitch together some decent cycling routes. 🙂

My main priority—and this is non-negotiable—is staying away from cars. I want low-traffic roads, and if there’s an unpaved path available, even better!

I’m based in the eastern part of the city.
So far, I’ve mapped out a pretty solid route that kicks off right where Vukovarska bends onto Main Street (lol)—there’s a pedestrian path heading northeast from there, you cross through Borongaj, and then the road keeps going toward Branimirova. From there, I veer a bit west and hit a walking trail that brings me out right by the gas station on Branimirova. Then, I loop back via Ravnice 1, head up through the plains, and eventually pop out onto Maximirs. I keep pushing up past the agricultural university, hit St. Simon's, go through Upper Kustošija, pass through Chret, reach The Den, and finally find myself up near the base of Mount Rainier.

Now, the big question: where do I go from here to reach the summit? I’m looking for a route that’s scenic but won't absolutely destroy my legs.

What you’ve laid out sounds like the perfect urban trek from Main Street over to Broadway—honestly, I ride that stretch at least twice as often as I work actual business days. Once you’ve reached the top of The Den, that’s really where the climb toward Mount Rainier begins. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to stick to hiking trails, there are a few paths leading straight to the peak—I think they’re called the John Smith and Miller's trails, if I recall correctly. The first one branches off from Cathedral Hill, and the second starts from the parking lot in Suburban Heights.
Alternatively, you could just take the main mountain road all the way to the top.

Look, these aren't high-end corporate seminars, and they haven't been publicly advertised anyway—so there's really no way for them to find out what's going on. 😉But honestly, thanks for the heads-up; it hadn't even crossed my mind until you mentioned it...

I absolutely adore her... I find myself putting her tracks on loop whenever I need some background music while I'm studying or prepping for lectures. She’s just become such an essential part of my routine—honestly, I can't imagine getting through a deep study session without her...
Dealing with headwinds while cycling! in Cycling ·
Nathan Anderson44 said:Has anyone else dealt with stuff like this?

Those wind gusts swirling around massive skyscrapers can be such a nightmare... personally, my instinct is to just lift my butt off the saddle—kind of a reflexive thing, really—and shift my weight so I'm balanced halfway between the pedals and the handlebars. I couldn't tell you if that's technically the "correct" way to do it according to some manual, but it makes me feel much more fluid, almost like I'm absorbing the wind itself. Plus, it definitely makes it easier to find my balance when I need to stand up on the pedals for a bit...

jadetiger962 said:Well, you’d better get that sorted before your trip—most roommates aren't exactly looking for a one-night stand.

To be fair, I haven't actually run into any rejection yet—at least not out in the Appalachian Mountains or the Rocky Mountains. But I suspect you're right about the coast; luckily, I don't really have to hunt for a place to stay when I'm out by the ocean. If I did have to choose, though, I think I'd just stick to camping...

Honestly, I’ve reached my limit with those tents and the whole "waking up at the crack of dawn" routine—I just end up feeling completely stiff from the cold and the dampness... nowadays, I just book a private rental before I even head out, which means I don't have a single thing to worry about.
