The ending of Inception is pretty ambiguous, though isn't it true that Nolan basically suggested the main guy just decided he didn't care which level of reality he was in, as long as he was happy and back with his kids...

I don't know, I’ve always found Pirates to be pretty decent movies, especially considering they have such an incredible cast lined up, like Johnny Depp, Rush, Javier Bardem, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, and Sam Neill.

Still, those films are massive pop-culture phenomena, operating on a much larger and more complex scale than other franchises like Twilight or The Hunger Games.

It seems the audience's sense of success is definitely on a different wavelength than the critics...
Am I really the only one who feels like all those Pirate movies set in the Caribbean were unfairly trashed by critics? I mean, okay, maybe not the third one—that was absolute garbage, but the rest?

Of course, that’s just my own personal take, not some universal truth.

A personal take? I'd call that one insane. 😁
Here is a solid little chart showing how much critics and audiences have disagreed on movies over the last two decades.

At the end of the day, those are just crowdsourced ratings, and there isn't much anyone can do to sway the collective mood of the internet. Then you have critics, who are essentially just individuals masquerading as experts, aren't they? 🙂

This really hits hard for anyone who actually appreciates David Fincher. 😁

What exactly is it about his work that makes you feel comfortable tossing it all into the trash like that?
Yeah, they actually got trashed by the critics, can you believe it?
I'm curious to know which movies you all think were unfairly panned by critics despite actually being absolute gems?

Is there anything more satisfying than watching the critics absolutely trash a film, only to see it spark a massive backlash and eventually settle into the status of a total classic? 👍

Right now, I can only think of: Top Gun, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Fight Club, and The Intouchables.
Superhero movies have become this massive cultural phenomenon, haven't they? We haven't seen this kind of genre hysteria since the days of the old-school Westerns.

True classics are being made, sure, but even this will eventually fade once the current Marvel's lineup—guys like Downey and Evans—moves on. I honestly suspect their run might wrap up around 2020.

After that, we'll probably see fewer films like these, though the ones that do come out will likely be much more serious and grounded, something along the lines of The Dark Knight...
