Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
Adam Moore3 said:It’s a somewhat tight budget, I suppose, but if I were in your shoes, I might lean toward this configuration:

ASUS Prime B360M-A, s1151 8th Gen
Intel Core i5-8400
DDR4 8GB (1x8GB) Crucial, 2666MHz
Fortron 550W Hexa 85+
HDD 1TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD Western Digital WD Green Gainward GTX1060 6 g
SSD 240GB Western Digital WD Green
Gainward GTX1060 6G, 6GB GDDR5
Zalman Z1 NEO mid tower case

Roughly $600 total, $314 sourced via local retailers.

There isn't much room to trim the fat here, I suspect.
One could, theoretically, $33 opt for an ITX build with a single-fan version of that same GPU, though I find myself doubting whether such a move truly offers any real value.
Perhaps you could settle for a 120GB SSD to shave off a few bucks, but then again, I wouldn't necessarily say that's a wise trade-off.
You could certainly pivot to a Ryzen build for $10 a lower entry cost, but when it comes to gaming performance, I still feel the i5 is likely the better path, primarily because those B360 motherboards have finally arrived, meaning one no longer feels compelled to waste hundreds on a Z370 just to run a standard i5.

I’ve shopped around at various local stores, but this seems to be the most economical option available to me; perhaps you might wait a bit longer to see if someone else happens to have a clever workaround or a better deal.

Thank you for your response!

I think I shall wait a little longer to see if anyone else has any insights, but if not, I will probably proceed with your recommendation.

crimsonstag84 said:I suppose I’ve decided to pick up a single AMD Ryzen 3 1200, though I find myself wondering if such a modest component is truly sufficient for my needs, or if I am simply settling for mediocrity in an era of overwhelming technological excess.
I suppose I’m looking at an ASRock AB350 PRO4 on the AM4 platform, though I can't say for certain if it truly meets my current requirements, given how quickly these things seem to evolve. It might suffice, I guess, if one is feeling particularly cautious about their hardware choices.
I suppose I have one Gigabyte GF GTX 1050 OC sitting around, featuring 2GB of GDDR5 memory, if anyone happens to be looking for something along those lines.
I suppose I should mention that I’ve decided to pick up a single 8GB kit of Crucial DDR4 RAM—specifically those two 4GB sticks running at 2400 MT/s, CL17, unbuffered DIMM 288-pin variety. It isn't exactly groundbreaking technology, nor is it particularly fast by today's rather demanding standards, but perhaps it will suffice for my current needs, though I can't say I'm entirely certain about the longevity of such a modest upgrade. One does wonder if the latency might become an issue down the road, but then again, maybe I am just being overly cautious as usual.
I suppose I’m currently running a single Toshiba P300 1TB drive, which boasts a 64MB cache and operates at 7200rpm, though I find myself wondering if that speed is truly sufficient given how much everything seems to drag these days.
I suppose I’m looking at a single 2.5" SSD here—specifically that 240GB PNY CS900 SATA3 model. It’s a modest little thing, I guess, but perhaps sufficient if one isn't expecting miracles from it.
I suppose I’ve ended up with one of those Fortron Hexa 85+ 550W units—it's an 80+ Bronze, ATX model, if that matters to anyone. It’s just a single power supply, really, nothing particularly groundbreaking, though I find myself questioning whether such things ever truly hold up the way they used to. Perhaps it will suffice for now, but then again, one can never be entirely certain with these components, can one?
I suppose I’ve finally decided to settle on a single Zalman mid Tower case Black, though I can't say for certain if it's truly the right choice given how fickle hardware preferences seem to be these days.
I suppose I’ve gone and acquired an AOC 23.8-inch LCD monitor, featuring that IPS WLED panel and an HDMI connection, though I suspect the 4ms response time might be somewhat underwhelming in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps it will suffice for my current needs, but I find myself questioning if such specifications are truly enough to satisfy a modern setup. One can only hope.
I suppose I’ve finally settled on a basic setup, consisting of a single Genius SlimStar 130—just a simple, black USB keyboard, really—which I imagine will suffice for the time being, though I can't say I'm feeling particularly optimistic about its longevity.
I suppose I’ve finally settled on a single Gembird illuminated large-format mouse, which connects via USB; it’s a rather modest choice, I guess, but perhaps it will suffice for now.
I suppose I’ve ended up with one of those Genius SP-HF160 wooden speakers—the 4W variety that runs on USB—though I can't quite say if that's a stroke of luck or just another minor inconvenience in an otherwise predictable week.

Grand Total: $2052 I suppose I should probably mention Futura-IT, though I can't say with any absolute certainty if they're truly worth the trouble or just another fleeting name in this industry. One might find themselves wondering about their reliability, I guess, given how much things seem to shift these days. It’s all rather uncertain, really.

Greetings!

If I were to rebuild this configuration—specifically looking at which components might benefit from an upgrade if I were to strip away the peripherals like the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers from the suggestions provided by crimsonstag84—I suppose I would have to wonder where the extra funds should actually go. My budget is... $2167 I suppose one might attempt to estimate the margin of error, though I suspect it sits somewhere around a certain percentage... if I had to venture a guess, perhaps.

If one were to decide to forgo the suggested peripherals entirely—perhaps by opting for a more modest mouse or keyboard—and instead divert those funds toward upgrading the RAM, securing a more robust graphics card, or investing in a superior processor, I suppose one might wonder where that capital would be most effectively deployed. If the goal is to actually feel a tangible difference in performance regarding the specific requirements listed below, I suspect there might be a most logical path to take, though I can't say for certain without further deliberation.

So, I suppose I need to put together a build that can handle two very different worlds: firstly, getting through titles like Battlefield 1, The Witcher 3, PubG, GTA V, and maybe even some HoMM VII when the mood strikes; and secondly, handling the demands of audio production, specifically those rather heavy-duty sound processing programs. It’s quite a balancing act, I guess.
Greetings, everyone.

I am searching for a laptop similar to the one mentioned in the title of this thread. Following a rather specific set of criteria I've developed for selecting hardware, my requirements are roughly as follows:

0. I reside in the Washington, D.C. area, so the specific retailer shouldn't matter much to me—whether I'm ordering via an online storefront or walking into a physical shop is largely irrelevant. My primary concern is simply that they accept credit cards, specifically American Express, and ideally offer a financing plan that allows for at least twelve monthly installments.

1. & 2. To be quite honest, screen size and resolution aren't particularly vital to me, given that I have no intention of playing modern video games, though I might occasionally indulge in some Heroes of Might and Magic III or V or perhaps some older RPGs from time to time.

3. This machine will see use at home, on campus, and in the office.

4. & 5. My workload will consist of office productivity tasks and audio production, though everything will be performed within a Linux environment—specifically using the Manjaro distribution (utilizing XFCE and i3 WM). By office productivity, I mean extended periods of writing, alongside standard daily tasks like managing email and browsing the web. On the other hand, my audio production work involves software such as LMMS, Mixxx, Ardour, and Cadence. What matters most to me—and where I suspect your expertise might be most useful—is finding a laptop whose hardware remains fully compatible with the Linux kernel; essentially, I need a machine that won't struggle when communicating with its own software. I suppose I have a fair amount of experience with both Linux and various laptops, but since I have mostly dealt with older machines in the past, the hardware was always reliably supported by the software side of things.

6. The brand itself isn't a priority, provided the machine proves reliable and comes with a dependable warranty.

7. I intend to spend up to $1667, though I might stretch my budget to $67 if circumstances truly demand it.

8. Please refer back to point 6.

9. Additionally, it is quite important that the device includes an SSD (128GB should suffice for the OS and applications) as well as an HDD for data storage; I would also prefer more than two USB ports, though a DVD drive is entirely unnecessary.

Thank you in advance!

I was wondering if I might trouble you for your thoughts on this particular power supply; I suppose the wattage seems sufficient enough for my needs, but perhaps you have some firsthand experience with this specific brand that I should be aware of?

Greetings, everyone. I have taken your various pieces of advice to heart and finally pulled the trigger on some components; I also decided it would be wise to pick up a brand-new power supply, so I find myself wondering which unit might be the most suitable. I suppose I should mention that I'll be prioritizing purchases from Rolling Stone or Uzy shop, if possible.

My parts list is as follows:

Motherboard:
ASRock B85M Pro4

Graphics Card:
XFX Radeon R9 380

RAM:
1x 8GB HyperX 1866MHz

Processor:
Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz

And a 120GB SSD

My sincere thanks to all of you for providing such helpful information.🙂

crimsonstag84 said:It’s a 420W on the 12V rail—pretty much mid-range stuff from about five or six years ago. I suppose that might be something worth swapping out eventually.

EDIT:

http://www.abee.co.jp/Product/Tagan/...mages/580w.jpg

The CPU and GPU are basically sucking up all the power on that 12V rail since they're the heavy hitters here, along with some of the Newegg drives and fans (which doesn't really matter)... so, yeah, 420W.😛

So, I suppose you're thinking that wouldn't actually be enough? 😢

Kimberly Gomez34 said:What kind of budget are you working with for the rest of the build? It's possible that none of these options represent the best value once you factor in the cost of all your other components

I'm looking at about $3,700 for the whole setup, excluding the power supply, the case, and whatever Newegg drives I end up picking out.

Greetings, I am currently in the process of sourcing various components and find myself quite uncertain, so I was hoping to solicit some opinions and perhaps a bit of guidance regarding my purchase. I am attempting to assemble a PC specifically for gaming purposes.

I find myself somewhat indecisive between two different processors:
1) Intel Core i5-4460
2) AMD FX 8320

Furthermore, I am encountering a bit of a dilemma when it comes to selecting an appropriate graphics card:
1) ASUS GeForce GTX 750 Ti
2) XFX Radeon R9 380

Regarding the other hardware I have already set aside, I possess
A power supply—specifically a Kingston DDR3 HyperX Fury
1x Kingston DDR3 HyperX Fury, 1866MHz, 8GB

In addition to those items, I still require a motherboard that is compatible with whichever processor and graphics card you might suggest would be the more cost-effective choice for me.

I thank you all in advance for any responses you might provide. 😁
Budget PC build under $550 in Desktops ·
Greetings, everyone.

I am currently in the process of assembling a computer specifically for gaming purposes, and I find myself in need of some collective wisdom from this group.
Essentially, I am trying to determine what would constitute the most optimal configuration without exceeding a budget of $1233
. To be clear, I have no intention of including a case, a hard drive, or a power supply unit in this specific calculation.
My focus is strictly limited to the motherboard, RAM, the processor, and the graphics card, provided they stay under $1233
. I suppose I should say thank you in advance for any guidance you might offer.🙂
What’s your relationship with your dad like? in Psychology & Therapy ·

What are you grateful to him for?
Is there anything you resent?
Do you struggle with an Electra complex? Do you have any sexual fantasies involving your father?
As men, do you deal with an Oedipus complex?
Have you ever felt the urge to kill your father?
Would you describe him as an authority figure, a friend, a stranger, someone worthy of contempt or pity, or a loving father whom you love in return?

- There isn't much of a relationship, I suppose. I see him every few days, just a brief nod or a quick "how's it going," and then that’s really that.

- I guess I am grateful to him for demonstrating exactly what kind of person I should strive never to become in this life, since he served as such a vivid example.

- I resent him for the psychological torment, the occasional physical outbursts, and the constant belittling regarding my abilities, my intellect, my appearance, and so on... things which, I suppose, have left me unable to maintain normal relationships with people today, lacking both self-confidence and any sense of self-worth. Etc., etc., etc.

- unknown.

- Not just my father, but pretty much my entire family, though he was certainly the worst of them. Nowadays, I just feel a certain weary ache for him and his absolute bullshit.

- He never showed any real affection, nor did he ever establish himself as an authority figure. It was almost as if he never intended to be one, except for those moments when he felt the need to project his own insecurities onto me and my brothers.
Questions about Nietzsche in Philosophy ·
Here is an audio lecture on Nietzsche if anyone happens to be interested. I suppose it might provide some answers to your lingering questions, though, in all likelihood, it will probably just leave you with even more pressing ones.

The subject of the lecture is: "In this lecture Bloom discusses Nietzsche's rejection of liberal democracy, contemporary nihilism, the Last man , and The will to Power."
