The decision has been made: we’re going with Muay Thai and "Holy Spirit"
I appreciate all the input, everyone; I'll see you at training this September 😁

By the way, what on earth was that absolute demolition Wolverine1112 and arantes30 pulled on the Muay Thai thread? 😂
(Total dorks)

There is simply no way I am getting any sleep at five in the morning.😁

To pick up where I left off...
I am planning to begin training in a martial art this coming September, and until then, I will be attempting to narrow down my choice.

As of right now, the selection has been whittled down to three specific disciplines. (For the time being, anyway.)

1. Muay Thai
Are broken bones, nasal fractures, and similar injuries a common occurrence in this sport?
If they are, my old lady is going to ban me from training indefinitely once she realizes what kind of scrap I'm getting into. Damn.😢
And truthfully, I have no desire to break my body more often than absolutely necessary.
That said, the skill set seems truly impressive—essentially like kickboxing, but much more intense.
I appreciate how it focuses on actual striking with both hands and legs, along with clinching techniques, which is generally the most vital part if you ever find yourself facing an attacker.

2. Krav Maga
This feels more like a series of self-defense courses tailored to specific scenarios.
From what I have gathered while reading through various threads on this forum, there seems to be a significant amount of skepticism surrounding this method.
Is it actually worth the time and effort, or is it just hype?

3. Wing Chun
Daniel Garcia, did you mention somewhere that you have started training in this?
What is your assessment of the discipline?
Is there any truth to what someone posted here previously about seeing a guy use Wing Chun techniques to absolutely dismantle some bully at a club?

Does anyone happen to know the exact names and addresses of clubs located near the city center that offer these styles?

Thanks.

Daniel Garcia said:Just head over to a Muay Thai gym—you've got two solid spots right in town, Spartan Gym and Holy Spirit. And look, regarding those headshots—brain damage risk is basically only an issue for the pros taking heavy hits all day, so you don't need to sweat it.

I have actually been giving Muay Thai some serious thought.
My only hesitation is whether it is an overly bloody sport, particularly for someone like me who is essentially a total novice at this stage. 😁
For instance, I have no desire to end up with a broken nose once a month.
Is that kind of intense injury simply the price one has to pay if they want to truly toughen themselves up?

How does the training process typically begin?
And how much time would it realistically take before I am ready to engage in more intense sparring sessions with others?

I have also been considering Krav Maga. What is the general consensus on that discipline?

Sam Roberts said:You don't have to worry about Klitschko facing any real consequences. In 30 fights, he never took a hit like that... but if he stepped into the ring against someone like Frazier or Foreman, things would be different.

True, but Klitschko stands at a massive six-foot-seven and weighs about two hundred fifty pounds, whereas I currently weigh whatever it is I weigh...
Not to mention my wingspan 😁

I’m hoping someone here can point me toward the kind of training regimen I would actually need.🙂

Hello everyone..

Here is my situation..
I am 15 years old, weighing about 121 lbs, and I stand 5'8" tall..

I have a strong desire to take up a martial art, but there are just so many disciplines out there that I am finding it difficult to decide which path to take..
My primary objective is self-defense; I want to reach a level where, after a year or two of consistent training, I would be able to successfully defend myself if someone were to attack me..
I practiced karate from the age of 9 until I was 14, but we all seem to realize that it isn't necessarily the kind of sport that prepares you for a real-world confrontation on the street..

The frequency of the training sessions won't be an issue for me, nor will the intensity; I am currently in good physical shape because I go for runs almost every day, and I also play tennis quite frequently..

It would be ideal if the gyms were located near downtown Chicago, or at least somewhere I could reach easily by bike or via the CTA within a reasonable amount of time..

If possible, I would prefer a style that doesn't involve excessive strikes to the head; I’m not a girl, obviously, but I have no intention of looking like Muhammad Ali in a few years due to accumulated damage.🙄

Thank you 👍
