I've been dealing with asthma since I was two years old.
I've cycled through Serevent, Ventolin, Flovent, Seretide, and Singulair.
As you can tell, I've had my fair share of experience with this stuff—unfortunately. 👎
But anyway, I have a question:
I didn't take any meds this summer because I wasn't doing anything active. Today I went out for a little rollerblading and ended up having a major asthma attack. It was bad... imagine if I had actually gone for a run.
I don't have any allergies or anything; my asthma just "activates" whenever I push myself physically. Now that I’m planning to start running, I’m definitely going to need my meds again. I'm also starting a diet, so I wanted to ask:
1. Is Singulair a corticosteroid, and what has your experience been like with it? When I first started taking it, it seemed to do the trick perfectly, but once my body got used to it, it became almost totally useless.
2. Does Singulair cause an increased appetite or lead directly to weight gain?
3. Regarding Ventolin—is it actually a corticosteroid, and does it increase appetite or cause weight gain?
One more thing. I'm 19, and this really shouldn't be happening—whenever someone yells too loud or I get startled, my heart starts racing and hurting, like, REALLY hurts. Could this be because of the corticosteroids I've been taking basically my whole life (especially the Serevent), and what should I do about it?
Is anyone else going through this??
Anyway, I'm seeing Dr. Raos, and he was the one who recommended Singulair...
Is there anything new on the market that's actually healthier than Singulair??
Thanks for any help. 🙂
