I actually have the second kind
I mostly use them to maintain the shape of shoes I store away for long periods, especially since they tend to lose their structure if left sitting too long.
The last time I tried using them, I was working on a pair of shoes that were just a bit too tight; I ended up using the front wooden part wrapped in a thick sock that I had pre-treated with some hand cream. I think I managed to stretch them out by about a third of a size, though I can't say for certain because those shoes are so gorgeous that I suspect I might be 🕺deluding myself just a little bit.
