Slow DSL connection with D-Link DSL 584 T router
in IT Support ·
I ran into some similar issues with AT&T, and they actually swapped out about three different routers for me before things settled. Once I bumped up my speed, the whole connection felt much smoother—even DirecTV worked perfectly. Eventually, though, the bills were just getting too high—I was paying for mobile, internet, DirecTV, and landline all together at about $200 a month—so I switched over to Verizon. Now, my total for mobile, internet, and home phone is only $90. I ditched the DirecTV, too. It's all one flat rate, except my internet speed is capped at 4 Mbps. I'm using a Technicolor TG788ivn router. I noticed early on that my speeds would tank—sometimes in the evening, and later during the day too—dropping almost to zero. I called Customer Service and an AT&T technician came out to help. He used his own equipment to test the speed, and it clocked in at over 5 Mbps! Meanwhile, when I run tests on my phone, tablet, or computer using www.speedtest.net, the results are less than half of what he saw. When I plug my PC directly into the router with an Ethernet cable, the speed stays above 4 Mbps. It seems like the router is sending a solid signal, but my computer isn't catching it properly—or maybe it's just receiving less than it should? Does anyone have any ideas on what I should tweak? My PC is a few years old and runs Windows 10.
