The provocation tactic here is pretty obvious
Don't expect any more replies from me, but don't let that ruin your fun

Bellwether, while you're at it, check the IP address of Jacob Thompson76's diligent lawyer, please. She clearly seems spooked, so find out if her fear is justified. I suspect it is, though my paranormal abilities aren't quite as sharp as hers—since she can apparently not only predict the future but also accurately profile everyone on Social Science after just fifty posts (we were discussing moderator objectivity, the good intentions of old-timers, or the motives of those popping up like mushrooms after rain despite their post counts and join dates making their true purpose obvious)... anyway, verify my assumption. And maybe reward her for all that effort.

Thanks.

we've already googled the provocations

I highly doubt Didi will take it that way. She’s already made her stance on "well-meaning criticism" very clear.

As far as I'm concerned—being completely honest—I'm not just protecting her, I'm protecting myself. Analyzing Didi's behavior and trying to map out her psychology is getting incredibly tedious.

Regardless, I am still waiting for an answer to the question already asked.

The question was directed at Bellwether. If she finds it too difficult to answer, then I ask that someone else from a higher level—someone actually privy to the information used to justify the permanent ban on Harmenszoonov—steps up and does it.

Ashley Lopez75 said:Bellwether,

Could you please explain your claim that Haremszoon is just a clone of someone who was previously banned?

....

One could easily get the impression that you can just label anyone a "clone" and then use it as an excuse to permanently ban whoever the moderators don't like.

This lack of response is becoming strange at best, and it calls into question the integrity of the entire moderation system.

If there weren't solid arguments behind that decision, then the only logical move would be to overturn the ban.

Bellwether,

Can you please explain your claim that Haremszoon is just a clone of someone who was banned?

What exactly are you basing that accusation on in the Ban Corner?

Aside from that last post where he was baited—specifically by the moderator—Harmenszoon has always been incredibly calm and professional... Without an actual explanation, it starts to look like anyone can be labeled a clone just so the moderators can permanently ban whoever they don't like...

I wanted to weigh in on the Jacob Thompson76 ban over in the Ban Corner, but apparently, only banned users can post there. Hmmm... nice isolation... though even in prison, visitors are allowed 🤣🤣🤣

I don't think the point is who was right—both Did's arguments and Jacob Thompson76's have been laid out for everyone to see, so anyone can judge.

But: the ban is unjustified regardless. It’s a prime example of short-fused moderation, and an equally inappropriate misunderstanding of her own role by the moderator

Did was the one who used the word "nonsense" in that exchange. It's a shame he took the bait, because once that word left his mouth, the excuse for the ban was found.

The word "follower" (used in this post's title) is grotesque in this context; it belongs in a cult, not a discussion about a PDF. But it seems Did categorizes the Social Science visitors using that exact logic.

Colbert brought a bit of healthy atmosphere to the threads she runs. Tolerance, but with backbone—I respect that. But Colbert is Colbert, and Did is Did... Did clearly doesn't understand the meaning of tolerance (obviously, hasn't bothered to check a dictionary)

To declare myself: I am also a "non-follower." I see no reason to be anyone's follower, nor should that offend anyone. But since I know how things work with Did, I stay away from discussions (which actually achieves her goal of segregation within the language threads)

Professional expertise isn't enough to know how to moderate. Did DOES NOT know how to moderate. She takes everything personally.

Look, instead of actually listing specific complaints, this is starting to look more like your usual style on Social Science: a whole lot of words, but very little substance...

It’s the other way around, bluerider2... It all started with general dissatisfaction... then the actual arguments started piling up. And there's a very clear reality in how many people have spoken out. That's the bottom line, if nothing else... Straight to the point... Data suggests massive dissatisfaction over at Social Science...
You’re doing it again... acting like some untouchable authority, deciding everyone else is just talking nonsense while you're the only one actually making sense...

Look, just for once, show some respect for others. That criticism you received wasn't meant to be malicious. I get it, it probably didn't feel great...

First off: believe it or not, I don't personally know anyone from Social Science. At least, not that I'm aware of. So, all these claims about some connection between Stitch, Abyssus, and DementiaPraecox (Paul Price34)... who else did you drag into this? Some expert? steelskipper5? Colbert? Anyone else who ever dared to tell you that you were wrong? It just doesn't hold up. This is nothing more than one claim against another. Just try rewinding the tape a little...

Nobody claimed you knew them personally. That's irrelevant...

He keeps dragging in other names that nobody even mentioned... just seems like another attempt to shift the blame elsewhere. Take Sarah Garcia46, for instance. In my opinion, she’s beyond reproach. I’ve been reading her posts in this new thread about practicing English. She actually knows her stuff, she genuinely helps, and she isn't trying to act superior. You should take a page out of her book...

Sarah Garcia46 would have made a solid moderator...

I banned Dementia early on once for acting out. Would I really do that if we were actually colleagues, buddies, or friends? Not unless we start diving into conspiracy theories... which, personally, seems pretty pointless.

There you go again, talking about something nobody else even mentioned...

Since we’re already discussing Sarah Garcia46 and the sub-moderator proposal... At the start, I was told I wasn't competent in any aspect of Social Science other than linguistics. That was actually one of the core points discussed when deciding on a future sub-moderator: that they shouldn't be a linguist, but someone whose expertise or hobby lies in another field of Social Science, rather than language. Keep that in mind when reviewing the other proposals...

In any case, it would be better if Sarah Garcia46 were here. The way she demonstrates her competence is far more appropriate than yours...

It seems to me that your complaints are, to put it mildly, inconsistent. bluerider2 doesn't swear—that’s wrong. Abyssus swears—that’s also wrong. I feel insulted here—based on comparisons, though that just shows we've actually learned a few rhetorical figures from Social Science. Every single attacker claims to be offended, the topic shifts back to Social Science, and when I ask for specific examples, I get hit with "we won't talk like that." The moderator deletes a post—not good. The moderator doesn't delete a post—not good again... Anyway, I'll set that aside. You're trying to express dissatisfaction in a very broad way, without providing a single concrete example...

You're playing word games again. Let’s be clear:

It’s fine that bluerider2 doesn't swear. But it isn't fine that bluerider2 feeds specific talking points to people who agree with her and sidelines others... (you can see examples of these maneuvers right here in your own post)
The issue is that bluerider2 doesn't call out those who insult others or use profanity.
Furthermore, there's the problem that she does everything in her power to make anyone she dislikes feel unwelcome.

Most likely, she would have suspended or banned the rest of us if we had given her even the slightest excuse. There were provocations coming from her side specifically designed to push things that way; it's a miracle no one crossed the line of decency.

That last part is purely speculative on my end.

The causes, as usual, lie elsewhere. The first is the fact that nobody considers linguistics a serious science; instead, there's this general idea that anyone can just meddle in language.

That's the exact thesis Abby uses to justify her intolerance toward others. Personally, I don't think linguistics is any different from any other profession. People "meddle" in medicine, computers, law, and everything else too. In fact, people have every right to "meddle" in whatever interests them without running into the hostility of so-called "experts." Correct them, sure, but do it civilly. If it bothers you that people do this, then don't moderate a forum where such behavior is bound to happen and should be tolerated.

The Language Advisor has been simplified that way—I didn't break it into several topics, which is untrue; it's still there, practically untouched. All participants were asked to post questions following it and potentially provide answers, rather than discussing their own opinions, as the latter is what the Lingy-cup is intended for.

The root of the people's dissatisfaction was cut short. Whether you did it for this reason or that, it's impossible to prove. But the fact remains that you chose this exact moment to do it, rather than any other. A diplomatic move, perhaps—but judging by the tone here, the resentment has already brewed too much for it to be effective.

It would be interesting to see someone request help on the PZ regarding physics, chemistry, math... get an answer, and then have several people attack the responder with "arguments" like "the spirit of mathematical formulas" or "that works in math, but not in physics or chemistry." Not to mention how the same questions are asked a hundred times, and when the asker is advised to search the thread, they simply refuse. We once had a case where the same question was asked three times on a single page. You'll agree that this requires nerves of steel and patience. I have them, and I need them as a moderator; forum members aren't obligated to provide them.

Nerves and patience are required, I agree. That applies to every topic. I read other threads where I haven't even commented—those kinds of situations happen everywhere. And as for your nerves and patience... one gets the impression their range depends entirely on personal preferences.
It seems to me—though I won't go digging, as it's easily verified—that Abyssus has been repeatedly putting one specific individual on ignore. It makes one wonder if that person is just constantly cloning themselves to bypass the block...
This isn't a matter of public interest.

To wrap this up:
I can testify, and it’s all written right here for everyone to see, that you have treated me with extreme rudeness and intolerance. And clearly, I'm not the only one who has experienced that from you.

But looking at the bigger picture—you don't strike me as someone who is "all bad." You clearly know your field, and you could perform much better than you have shown.

This isn't a witch hunt. Nobody is coming for your head.

An apology would be more appropriate, and certainly far better received by everyone here than these elaborations of yours, even if you are offering them in a tone somewhat milder than your usual style.

.... which, hopefully, means there's some positive takeaway from all this.

Sarah Garcia46 said:Exactly. And there is no desire here to mention those "senseless individuals" either. In fact, one of them is constantly disrupting the rhythm of Social Science. That is, of course, "Dementia praecox," a clone of "Paul Price34," whom LJES issued a lifetime ban to (in the "Asian Women" thread).

She is tolerated, and no one dares to oppose her because she is unpleasant (or perhaps because she is supposedly an "eminent professor"). Is it not surprising that you haven't noticed she is the very ulcer on Social Science?

Agreed. The person I was trying not to name is her.

But I have to add that it was easier (at least for me) to ignore someone who wasn't a moderator, regardless of how aggressive they were. But how do you ignore a moderator when she sticks to you like Velcro, attacking with loaded premises and biased posts? She doesn't even hide her goal; it’s obvious from bluerider2's words to me:

No, it would be nice if you just left us alone if our society doesn't suit you.

Coming from the "hostess" of this PDF herself! The persona being forced on me is conducting purges.

The root of everything, in this specific case, was one disagreement I had with Abby. Quite a radical move by the moderator, wouldn't you say, defending her preferred side? Anyone looking closely will easily see which way the tide turned and against whom...

And her invoking "our society"—that obviously refers to the same old tight-knit clique that moves in unison to insult anyone expressing dissent. That group consists of bluerider2, A., and that particular SM...

@redmarlin3
It isn't quite the same whether you read diagonally or follow a discussion line by line. In diagonal reading, you miss all the subtle treacheries and the interconnectedness of actors who pretend to act independently...

@ Abyssus
I can't help with that specific request.

Don't go taking Anić's word for it. There’s some real nonsense going on in there.

@Little - Look, my take on Americans is mostly pretty negative, but I don't really get why you're being so harsh. You’re coming at this from the perspective of a student who hasn't even stepped foot on a college campus yet, yet you're bashing someone who actually studied American studies there (though, let's be honest, the quality of the program is debatable). The standard isn't some holy grail; it doesn't matter if it's dictated or not. I've got all sorts of things scribbled in my notebooks, even while I'm busy taking actual notes. If something bugs you, just fix it and move on. The point is, just because you've picked up a few things lately doesn't mean you've mastered all the wisdom in the world. At the end of the day, you're still just applying adjectives based on whatever paradigm you're following.

Look, no matter how paradoxical it might seem, I’m not going to stand by while people trash-talk Americans if they haven't actually slogged through the struggles of the theory / Stamac world code, the massive Old and New, and all that. Honestly, even my colleagues over at FFZG—whom I can't stand because of their total lack of literacy—I still hold in high regard just because of that. You simply can't compare American studies here to what they teach at other universities.

------------

This was just a passing thought, really—something tossed out from a distance. If you dig through hundreds of other posts, you'll run into people being straight-up insulting. It’s all that loud, jittery, aggressive venting, too. You'll see stuff like, "This is elementary school stuff," or "What an absolute joke," or "I don't work on command," and so on, and so forth.

Jerry Roberts15, no single post taken out of context within this toxic atmosphere provides an adequate illustration of the situation. Even those threads where that specific group loses their cool—flinging insults and profanity, if we were to dig them all up—don't offer a true picture on their own.

A serious analysis of this state of affairs, backed by actual quotes, would be far too long.... and nobody would bother reading it in detail. Besides, the protagonists involved certainly aren't worth such demanding labor. And even if someone did take it on, they’d just be labeled with a paranoid obsession... Rule 22...

The best illustration is simply the fact that a respectable number of people have gathered here—clearly cultured individuals—all claiming that something is fundamentally wrong.

Tyler Grant76 said:Hey, Vojky The budo 🙂

Look, if bluerider2 had to address every single complaint about Abyssus... we could probably fill an entire PDF just for the Complaints section 🤷 I get why she deletes stuff or moves it to SIM, or even suggests starting a thread here; honestly, that’s all part of being a moderator.
As for those controversial posts, I imagine everyone would struggle to filter through every single one just to strip out the insults. Besides, even a perfectly clean sentence—meaning, zero literal slurs—can still be loaded with a malicious tone. And then you have to craft a response too. It's a total pain. 😁 😉
Either Abyssus will moderate herself or she'll just leave. 🤷 I doubt bluerider2 can do much to help.

She doesn't even need to respond on behalf of anyone else (whether it's A. or someone else, it doesn't matter)

When someone crosses the line of decency, a moderator should at least warn them.
If they ignore the warning and keep up the same style, it’s time for a card.
For a blatant violation or repeated rudeness, there's a ban.

Does bluerider2 do any of those standard moderation tasks? NO.

The problem with her moderation lies as much in what she does (provoking dissenters, putting words in their mouths, etc.) as in what she DOESN'T DO (she doesn't warn her arrogant favorites, let alone anything more...)

When the Language Advisor split into several threads (which isn't inherently bad), she did it because the situation was about to boil over... Too many dissatisfied people spoke up at once, so she had to scatter those voices to dissipate the tension she caused—tension that threatened her "moderator" (read: monopolistic) control. There were legitimate reasons to split topics before, but she didn't bother until she couldn't handle the "disobedient" ones one by one to make them look like weird outliers or isolated incidents.

Rotten work.

hollowtrucker77 said:this thread is only going to stay active if people start bringing actual, concrete complaints to the table
otherwise, I’m going to be forced to label the whole thing as spam
and just so we're clear, this isn't just about this specific thread
so, I'm asking everyone hanging around here to please try to be as specific as humanly possible

Specific, you say?

I suppose "specific" means when someone starts swearing. bluerider2 doesn't swear. The methods used to harass people here are far more insidious.

Anyone who disagrees with something or—heaven forbid—questions the infallibility of bluerider2 and her little group, gets ruthlessly belittled until they give up. They take words out of context, swap out arguments, throw in all sorts of insinuations... I've been there...

... and I gave up. Because life becomes unbearable when people twist every word you say, and then you try to correct them back to what you actually meant, and they twist it again... two, three, a hundred times if necessary... It’s just endless chains of posts.

Specifically: you have to follow entire threads just to figure out what's actually happening. But that's already actual work.

I went through the thread today and added one post where I accepted a valid criticism. Just because I spoke up. I have nothing against that kind of feedback: that's what conversation should be for—pointing out mistakes, oversights, or gaps in knowledge. After all, who doesn't have them?

Excuse me, I hear Abby doesn't have any. Excuse me, and bluerider2 undoubtedly doesn't either. I won't even mention certain mindless individuals who also lack them.

As things stand, and I doubt anything serious will change, there's no point even trying to participate in the conversation over at bluerider2's.
