As for the graphics card, maybe wait until Black Friday or see if any deals pop up after New Year's.

small update: my brother is buying a new GPU and asked if I wanted his old one. He’s got an ASUS dual series GeForce ® GTX 1060 OC edition 3GB GDDR5. Would that be okay? I'm assuming it'll perform better than mine.

RAM and the hard drive look fine—that’s probably my best bet right now. I’d hold off on the graphics card until after the New Year since that’s a bigger chunk of change. If I just grab those two things and skip the GPU for now, would that be a solid move?🤔

Hey,
After two years, I've finally decided to start upgrading my PC bit by bit. My main goal is to pick up the new NFS and Call of Duty, so I wanted to check if this setup can actually handle those and similar titles before I drop any cash. First on my list is adding at least another 8GB of DDR RAM—I know for a fact I need it. I'm also looking at grabbing a 1TB HDD since modern games are massive and my current drive is hitting its limit. Since you guys clearly know more than I do, could you let me know if these upgrades make sense? Or should I be looking to swap out other components instead? Thanks.

Specs:
1.AMD Ryzen 5 1400
2.Gigabyte AB350M-HD3 AM4
3.Corsair 1x8GB DDR4 2666LP
4.Kingstone SSD 120 GB A400
5.Seagate BarraCuda 1GB
6.Gigabyte GF GTX1050Ti D5 4GB
7.Fortron Hyper 500W
Windows Recovery is throwing an error in IT Support ·
goldenviper13 said:I don't think I quite follow. Did you install Windows 7 Ultimate directly, or were you trying to run the Windows Recovery through it? 🤔

So, I just finished installing Windows 7 Ultimate. Everything booted up perfectly and seems to be running without a hitch—except for one thing: the network card isn't working.🤔I can't get him online—not through Wi-Fi and not via Ethernet. It's probably just a matter of installing the drivers.
After that, I wiped the laptop and ran Windows Recovery.

Look, I’m not really the type to just throw in the towel. Once I get stubborn, I stick with it. :P
I finally found some time tonight to really dig into this laptop. I managed to nudge things forward from where they were stuck, but then I hit another wall 😵😵 ...I tracked down a Windows 7 Ultimate disc, but my BIOS wouldn't even list the internal DVD drive as a boot device, so I couldn't boot from it. I ended up grabbing an external USB DVD drive, which worked perfectly since the system recognized it as a bootable device. So, once that was done, I tried running a Windows Recovery. Everything seemed fine, and I was actually feeling pretty good about saving some cash 😁, but then everything went sideways. After the computer finished its routine, it gets to the "Starting Windows" screen, hangs there for a bit, and then moves to "is preparing your computer for first use." Right after that, the laptop just reboots itself and kicks me straight into the Windows Error Recovery window with the usual options:
-safe mode
-safe mode with networking
- safe mode with command prompt
- Last known good configuration
- start windows normally

No matter which one I pick, it just loops back to that "preparing for first use" stage and restarts again...
I have no idea if any of this info helps, or if anyone knows what could be causing it to crash right at that specific "preparing for first use" step 🤦😠🙂

Nope, it won't boot Windows at all—that’s the whole issue. I tried downloading this on my own PC.

Carl Carter90 As I have stated before:
Hey there,
I've been using my HP Latitude 5420 for about four years now. It came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home, which worked fine until about a month ago. Suddenly, the system refused to boot. My best guess? I was running a Windows update, the laptop wasn't plugged into the charger, it died mid-process, and now the OS is completely unresponsive. Maybe I'm wrong, but that seems like the most logical explanation for why it won't load anymore. I tried to run a recovery, but I just keep getting hit with these errors:
First, you're greeted by the Windows Recovery window, which just throws this useless error at you: "The data is invalid. : recoveryPartitionIndex == bootPartition."
And once I hit OK, this whole other window pops up labeled System Recovery Options, and it just tells me, "ERROR The installed program cannot start. Click OK to turn off the computer."
If anyone knows what’s going on here, please weigh in. I'm looking to see if this is something I can tackle myself or if I should just bite the bullet and drop it off at a repair shop. I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I'm certainly not a total amateur either. One more thing: if it turns out the issue is a corrupted recovery partition, can I actually request a fresh one from an authorized service center or the retailer? Since the machine was purchased with the recovery software pre-installed, I'm wondering what my options are there.
I've written quite a bit here, but only because I wanted to be as thorough as possible with my explanation.
If you need anything else, just let me know. I'm happy to provide more details.
Thanks in advance for the help.
👍

You don't even need to bother dragging your laptop to a repair shop; just download the right version of Windows and you're good to go.If you're looking to grab a copy of Windows 7, you can find the official download right here on Microsoft's site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7You need to use the exact key that came with the laptop—it has to be the identical one because that’s what the license is tied to. Once you've burned it to a disc or loaded it onto a USB drive, just boot from there, run the repair, and you're done. After everything settles, you'll just need to activate Windows using your key. Honestly, online activation fails more often than it works, so be prepared to do it over the phone. I’ve been looking into this guide on how to handle system recovery via phone, and honestly, it’s worth a read if you find yourself stuck in a loop. It covers the steps for getting back into your OS when things go sideways, specifically focusing on using those built-in tools to bypass errors that usually leave you staring at a blank screen. The process is pretty straightforward, though it requires some patience. You basically have to trigger the recovery environment—similar to how you'd access Windows Recovery on an HP device—to get to the System Recovery Options. From there, you can attempt to repair the boot configuration or roll back to a previous state. If you're running an older setup like Windows 7 Home or even Windows 7 Ultimate, the menus look a bit different than what you'd see on Windows 10, but the logic remains the same: diagnose the failure, then apply the fix. One thing to keep in mind: if you're dealing with a specific Hardware ID error or a corrupted boot sector, sometimes the software fixes aren't enough. At that point, you're looking at deeper system repairs. It’s a methodical process, but if you follow the instructions carefully, you can usually avoid having to take your laptop to a shop like Best Buy just to get it booting again. Just be prepared for a few restarts.Naturally, when you're on that phone call, you just select America. 🙂

Hey there.

I tried downloading it, but it’s not working... whenever I enter the product key to start the download, it tells me it was pre-installed on the device (ERROR The
product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options.)
Should I just download Windows from somewhere else and install it that way?

Kate Martin3 said:Look, just take it to an actual repair shop—not some guy working out of his garage down the street—and they should be able to either restore your recovery partition or just perform a clean reinstall of Windows. Ideally, you’d want to have your original receipt handy for the laptop, though I suspect you'll end up paying a pretty penny for the service. We're probably looking at something in the ballpark of $200-$100.

I'm mostly just guessing on the labor costs here, but that feels about right for a professional job.

Let me know how it turns out.🙂

I'm sure the receipt is around somewhere. I'll check, but if no one else can help, that's my only real option... thanks for the reply, I'll let you know what happens.

Hey there,
I’ve got an HP laptop, a Latitude 5420, that I picked up about four years ago. It came with Windows 7 Home pre-installed. About a month ago, Windows just stopped booting altogether. My guess? It was running a Windows update, the battery died because I wasn't plugged in, and the sudden shutdown bricked the boot process. I might be wrong, but that's my theory—either way, it won't load. I tried running a recovery, but I keep getting these errors:
- First, the HP recovery manager pops up saying: "the data is invalid. : recoveryPartitionIndex == bootPartition"
- Once I hit OK, a second window for System Recovery Options appears stating: "The installed program cannot start. Click OK to turn off the computer."
If anyone knows how to fix this, please help. Can I handle this myself? I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I'm not exactly a total novice either. Or should I just bite the bullet and take it to a repair shop? Also, if the recovery partition itself is corrupted, can I request a new one from an authorized service center or the retailer since it came with the factory recovery pre-loaded?
Sorry for the long post; I just wanted to be as thorough as possible.
Let me know if you need any more details.
Thanks in advance for the help.
