Take a look at what this track layout looks like...
Maybe the smartest move for those starting out on the hard compounds is to burn through their soft tires during a potential Safety Car period—just do a quick stint on the softs and then pivot back to the hards to get rid of them.
It’s an especially tempting gamble for the mid-field teams or anyone sitting further down the grid who really doesn't have much to lose by taking a shot at it.
I have a feeling that an early SC really plays into the hands of the teams starting on those harder compounds. If you look at the data from the race in Vietnam, it feels like the SC factor sits right around 43%, doesn't it?

Tyler Bennett5 said:We basically have two choices: either we settle for manufactured overtakes or we stick to natural racing via pit strategy.
In the first scenario, you get overtakes happening right on the track, regardless of how forced they feel.
In the second, any movement in position happens strictly through the pits—and even then, only if there's an opportunity for an extra pit stop.
Look, if the people calling the shots in F1 can't come up with anything that actually allows for genuine, organic
racing, then I'd honestly rather have something artificial than nothing at all.

That’s pretty much how I see it too.
Everything is just overflowing with love and understanding here...😍

Let's take a moment to talk about these Pirelli tires, which honestly feel like they were made out of chocolate.

"The life of the [soft] tyre, it's the worst I've ever experienced with bits flying off all over the place," Lewis Hamilton said.

"The soft is hardcore. It doesn't feel like the right tyre for this circuit. I did a couple of laps and the tyres just disintegrated."

But Pirelli motorsport chief Paul Hembery said the soft tyre was doing exactly what it was supposed to.

"If the medium did the same then I'd be concerned, but it doesn't," he said.

"It's a qualifying tyre. It'll be a bit like Melbourne I guess where the top teams are going to be forced to qualify on the softer tyre because it's such a performance advantage and within the first 10 laps they are going to have to pit.
Just dropping some intel from yours truly, as always:

Track characteristics

Indianapolis Motor Speedway; 5.45 kilometers. Race distance: 56 laps = 305 kilometers, 16 corners in total, featuring a mix of slow, medium, and fast turns.

Aerodynamic setup – Medium/high downforce. Top speed 200 miles/h (with DRS enabled on the rear wing) – 193 miles/h without.

Full throttle – 55% of the lap. Total fuel needed for race distance : 326 lbs.

Time spent braking: 14% of the lap. 8 braking zones. Brake wear : Medium.

Time lost during a Pit stop = 17.5 seconds
Total time needed for pit stop: 21 seconds.

Fuel Effect (cost in lap time per 10kg of fuel carried): 0.34 seconds (average). Fuel consumption: 2.55 kg/lap

Tires: medium and soft (one set used this season). The unique thing about this track is the higher wear on the front tires, and temperatures will likely be similar to what we saw in the USA (18-20 C).
Strategy tends to favor those going for two stops, though they might find themselves under pressure from three-stoppers in the closing laps.
Experience suggests that if you opt for more frequent stops, it pays off—and it looks like pit stops here are a bit quicker too.
Probability of an SC: 43 %.
Overall, it feels like Lotus could be strong in the race again, and maybe even Ferrari can snag something.
Qualifying outlook, as usual: RBR, MERC/FER, LOT.

Extra notes:

Mark Webber has a fresh haircut😁:

I think it’s finally time to lay this thread to rest. Only time will tell if those preseason numbers were actually a true reflection of how things would turn out, right?

Combined testing times from Austin:

While Lotus hasn't exactly been burning rubber out there, the new Williams crew seems to be leading the pack in terms of track time—though Ferrari is sitting in second, breathing right down their necks. Isn't it fascinating how much mileage can tell you about a team's preparation?

I noticed he listed "54bucks" on his profile page. I honestly never even caught that before... maybe that's where he's moving his content.

There might be something worth looking at here:

Oh, I think we’ve actually covered this ground already.😳

Anyway, here is a little collection of photos from back when we were doing all that testing:

Look at this absolute legend who took advantage of Button being totally lost. He managed to snap a crystal-clear shot of the car's fine details just because it pulled up right in front of the Lotus pit stall, all while the crew from McLaren is sprinting around in the background...😍

Honestly, those comparisons are a bit tasteless, don't you think? I’d kindly ask everyone to please tone it down and move on.

Thanks.

It’s still way too early to start making any definitive predictions.

The new Williams passed its crash test and should be ready for its debut in Barcelona. Honestly, I find it quite surprising that more teams haven't followed suit by now. Don't you think?
