Is Michael Bay actually a bad director?

Bay is total trash, and I honestly can't wrap my head around why people claim you need to "understand" his style. Just because he cranks out blockbusters doesn't mean they're good! There are plenty of massive hits out there that actually have substance—I'm talking everything from Ben Hur and Gladiator to The Matrix, not to mention those super fun Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The list goes on and on, but all those films just prove that a blockbuster doesn't have to be nothing more than a pile of cheesy clichés and pathetic tropes.
