I was just messing around putting together a random PC build up to $2000 and realized that for the amount of cash he’s dropping on a single GPU, you could actually build a seriously killer gaming rig (minus the monitor, obviously). You should probably give it some thought, . Here’s how it shook out: Cooler Master 332 + ASRock 870 + X4 635 + WD Blue 640 GB + XFX 5850 Black Edition + 2x2 GB Corsair 1333 + Corsair 450W + LG GH 22NS = $5,952
At least if you ask me, this blows what he’s running right now out of the water. He can always grab a high-end cooler later, overclock the CPU, and he'll have a beast of a machine.
Why on earth would you need 600W? A Corsair 450W can handle a single 5870 or even an overclocked 5850—which is basically the same thing at this point. If you're planning on running a serious CrossFire setup with dual 5870s, though, you'll definitely want to grab a Corsair 520W
First off, you gotta answer these questions for me
Are you looking for an AGP or a PCI-E card? What’s your current or upcoming setup look like, and what kind of power supply are you running? What resolution are you playing at? How much cash are you planning to drop on this? Which stores are you checking out? If you’ve got any other specific requirements, just lay them out for me.
Grab yourself a NVIDIA GTX 580, give it a little overclock, and boom—you basically have an HD 5870 on your hands. Since you didn't mention what kind of power supply you're running, if it’s just some cheap junk that came bundled with your case, go ahead and pick up an EVGA 450 W instead.
An EVGA 400 W would work too, but personally, I’d rather have that extra breathing room. 🙂
Check the label on your power supply to see what brand you're actually running. 🤦 What are you even talking about with an HD 4870? That's a totally different beast.
Look, if you're planning on upgrading your GPU, you really ought to grab a new power supply too—assuming that stock one that came with your case is basically junk. Here is what I'd suggest: The 5770 Vapor-X paired with a Fortron 400W
Honestly, just toss those $333 aside. Grab yourself a $1000 instead and you’ll have a whole new rig that’s easily 10x better. You could pick up a used GeForce 6600 GT, but honestly? It's not even worth the effort.
That’s just the type of memory used on the graphics card. It means a card running on DDR3 is going to outpace anything using DDR2. There are a few exceptions here and there, obviously.
