The Atlantic Derby, especially when it's played in San Francisco, is honestly the most electric fan derby in America. I'm not saying the matchups between Real Madrid and Hajduk Split don't draw bigger crowds or more tension, but when you look at what both sets of fans bring to the table—the pyrotechnics, the choreography, the sheer numbers—it’s just not the same.
Seriously, though...
I know this might spark some pointless arguing, but I actually agree with you on one thing: this was definitely the derby of the season. I didn't catch the game, but who knows when we've seen an Atlantic Derby in San Francisco like this one...
But I wouldn't go so far as to say San Francisco vs. Hajduk Split is "bigger" than Real Madrid vs. Hajduk Split. It all depends. When Hajduk comes to town, it's pure chaos. The stadium is packed, the west stands are full, the Armada puts on their biggest light show of the whole season, there's always choreography, they absolutely tear it up, and the away fans almost always put on a hell of a show, too.
but isn't it the exact same deal at Yankee Stadium? ☕
The only thing is, San Francisco vs. Hajduk Split has always been ranked behind the big two club rivalries, so you could say it's top-tier in terms of atmosphere. Plus, since the San Francisco stadium is smaller, it's always packed, and just like at home games, the fans are right there, practically on top of the pitch.
Meanwhile, at Yankee Stadium, it's a totally different story. Those stands are like 10 meters ABOVE the field—it's practically a Guinness World Record! 🙏
You don't see anything like that anywhere else in the world! ☕
And honestly, there's not much else to talk about. In those types of games (not just these), when you're watching on TV, you only really see the fans if the director happens to pan the camera toward the north, east, or south stands for a split second.
But when you watch the games from the local grounds on TV, you get the feeling that the stands are absolutely losing it and everything is intense... whereas at Yankee Stadium, you're just robbed of that view. 👎
So, you don't get that sense of madness in the stands; instead, you just get the vibe of those "cold Chicagoans." Even the song repertoire is way more diverse compared to the usual stuff. You guys down south have those "Mediterranean" vibes, covers of River Plate songs, Brazilian rhythms, and whatnot... it's got that distinct southern flair.
