In fact, over the last few years, I feel like hardly any movie or TV show has come out without at least one little nod to the Matrix.
And now, everyone is sitting around expecting us to get another "groundbreaking" masterpiece?
With the second Matrix, everyone was looking for something incredible, but everyone had a different idea of what that meant. Naturally, nobody got exactly what they were looking for, which explains why there's so much disappointment out there. I was disappointed too. But then, I watched it again. And then again. And then I watched The Animatrix. With every viewing, I find myself with more questions, and I'm becoming increasingly intrigued about where the final chapter is headed. From the realization that they aren't truly free to make their own choices (but how?), to the way The Architect spends the entire time talking about the engineered nature of The One... the second film leaves so many loose ends. When you connect those threads with the stories from The Animatrix, you get this incredibly complex composition. It isn't that perfectly polished, seamless package that the first Matrix was; instead, it feels like a complicated "organism" that is growing and evolving, and none of us really know what it will eventually turn into.
The Wachowski sibling duo proved they are far too much of perfectionists to leave everything perfectly tied up in the final installment. Personally, I've decided to trust that they won't let me down when they finally wrap up this story.
Who knows, though? Maybe they will. Maybe it all turns out to be total bullshit in the end. But I'm going to watch it anyway, because, at the end of the day, these are our era's Star Wars—a film that people will be talking about and remembering for a very long time...
