PC Build under $800 in Desktops ·

CNET. They'll assemble it for free, though you'll have to cover shipping (roughly $13). It would be a smart move to add some case fans later on
.
It’s a beefier GPU than what you originally had in mind, but honestly, picking something like a 460 or 470 from the previous generation just doesn't make sense anymore
.
Option 2 - You'd swap out the following
:
this card (it's a powerhouse for older or lighter titles, and it'll easily handle newer Bethesda games like Fallout 4)
.
this or this (or whatever fits your taste, but these are definitely the best bang for your buck in this price range alongside the Z3). Plus, you get free fans. Actually, if you aren't aiming for that 470, you don't even need to use this shop
.
This motherboard is a bit more feature-rich,
.
For an SSD, maybe grab this one—it has a slightly larger capacity and comes with a 5-year warranty. You'll actually end up coming in under budget
.

It looks awesome. I've already got three Corsair Red Wing 120mm fans, so I was thinking about adding more like you mentioned. I'd also love for the case to have room for side radiators...
Could I save some cash on the SSD (maybe go with a 120GB one) and put that money toward something else, like a better CPU? And is this motherboard any good for the price? Sorry, I'm totally lost on all this stuff.

Just like that CNET build, I went slightly over budget, but this is a hardcore gaming setup featuring a GTX 1060 😬

Alright. I could push it up to $1833 but I'm not sure. $1767 I've already got that ready, so I can count on that.
I'm just a little worried about how everything connects... you know, making sure everything works together properly so I don't end up with a massive amount of wasted memory paired with a crazy powerful graphics card or something like that
...
Regarding both of you: I got hung up on that SSD because a buddy of mine wouldn't stop raving about it, and seeing those read/write speeds really sold me. My main thought was getting it because my brother just started an IT program, and I wanted him to have a drive that handles data transfer and processing fast enough.

I'm not sure how critical an SSD is these days, though. I could probably just scrap it entirely and use that extra $300-$133 to pick up that ASUS motherboard. I think ASUS is better than MSI, at least that's how I remember it...

Hey everyone,

So, here's the deal. I'm looking to put together a build for up to $1767, excluding peripherals. It's for someone studying computer science who also games, but not like a hardcore enthusiast—nothing crazy intensive like high-end shooters, just more chill stuff like strategy games from Electronic Arts, soccer sims, or maybe some RPGs like a Bethesda game. I’ve always stuck with Intel's platforms and Nvidia cards in the past, but honestly, I've been out of the loop for so long that I'm pretty lost on what's current now...
I also want to include a decent little SSD (maybe 120GB) in this package. I used to run a 500GB HDD and never even came close to filling it up, so I don't need terabytes of storage, but a buddy of mine was telling me that SSDs are "absolute beasts"—super fast and perfect for running the OS. He really sold me on the idea, so now I'm thinking... Since I'm based in San Francisco, I can check out Newegg or Amazon/Best Buy, though I could look at anything if they offer shipping to the West Coast. I'm hoping for something that'll last me about 5 or 6 years, and I'm wondering if sticking with a DDR4 motherboard is still realistic given my budget...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you guys have!

It's always been this way. Being "normal" was never really my thing.

I'm not sure if there's a link to being "normal" or whatever—I've always been pretty skeptical about those labels—but it definitely feels different. Life would be a lot easier if I had a night shift job or lived in a massive city like New York or LA that never sleeps. Otherwise, you get stuck with all these ideas and things you want to try or experience, but they just don't line up with the actual clock...

That’s what I mean. You aren't completely losing it to the point where people start asking questions, you know? But you do have these "out of body" moments where you're just detached from reality, riding the wave, running on autopilot and using those survival mechanisms just to make it until nighttime, when you finally become a functional, social human being again.

Larry Lewis said:My therapist once told me—and I kid you not—that my penchant for staying up all night is just my way of retreating into my own little private universe.
I didn't quite wrap my head around her reasoning at the time, but honestly, what's the harm? There is something deeply restorative about just sinking into your own thoughts and actually enjoying them—without the constant, nagging pressure to deal with how things "should" be done or how life is "supposed" to function in the daylight.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but I also feel like it's wasted potential. You're creating all this stuff in total isolation, hidden away from everyone. I'm not the type who constantly needs validation, but I can see all those resources going to waste while I'm "operating" in the middle of the night. If I acted like this during the day, I think my whole life would look completely different. I really need to find some kind of balance...

That’s when their imagination truly seems to take flight. Personally, I know several people who are total night owls—they might spend the hours painting or sketching while the rest of the world sleeps, only to crash from 7 to 10 PM before tackling their more "traditional" daytime responsibilities.

People like that usually get labeled as unstable, and maybe they were, too. Not that I'm trying to downplay what they achieved or how much they gave to the world, but man... I'd love to ask them if they’d actually choose to live with that kind of "curse"...

Can you walk me through how you're feeling before and after? Are you looking to shake things up? You give me all that inspiration at 3 or 4 in the morning, and then I'll get back to you sometime in the afternoon. Just enough time for me to grab a Starbucks and get annoyed reading the local news...

Hey there,

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve tried to fix my sleep schedule, but honestly... total failure. It’s 9:00 AM right now and I haven't slept a wink because I caught some sudden wave of "inspiration" in the middle of the night. I can't even tell you how often this happens, but "frequently" feels like an understatement at this point. I figured I’d start this thread because maybe there are some kindred spirits out there dealing with this weirdness too. To put it bluntly, during the day, I’m basically a zombie. I'm just kind of drifting through life... taking notes on things, observing stuff, using whatever mental autopilot keeps me upright, but I don't really know what's going on inside my head. My memory is shot, too—I forget everything almost immediately, which is wild considering I'm not exactly a kid anymore. I wake up, shower, grab food, run errands, maybe meet someone, and that's about it. My days feel incredibly hollow, even when I try to pack them with stuff to do. It’s like one single, repetitive loop playing in my brain until the sun goes down. But then nighttime hits and everything shifts. I can't sleep, and suddenly it feels like I could conquer the world. I get this urge to play music, but of course, my neighbors are sleeping. I want to head out, but I don't want to be that guy pounding on the door or making noise and waking everyone up. So I settle for quieter things... writing, reading, practicing a new language, a million other things. I’ve even tried studying at night since daytime is impossible for me (I swear I retain twice, maybe three times as much info when it's dark out). The sad part is, I actually *do* get these things done, but once I finally pass out and wake up, it’s like it never happened. It’s like I slept through the whole productive session instead of working. The day just rolls on like I had a perfectly normal night's rest. Same people, same neighborhood (don't get me wrong, it's a nice area, just a routine), same old thing. I wouldn't say I'm "waiting for the night," because night is supposed to be for dreaming and resting, and I just can't do that. No matter how many alarms I set for 7:00 AM, they don't work. Last week, I went to bed around 1:00 AM and didn't crawl out from under the covers until 2:00 PM... I still had the energy to keep sleeping, but I didn't want to let the whole day slip away for nothing. Anyone else out there living like this? Any fellow night owls? Have you ever felt totally wired despite barely sleeping? Or has anyone actually managed to flip that "inspiration" switch from nighttime to daytime?
