I am so sorry for your loss.
Angela Wright said:Reading this feels like looking at a mirror of myself from ten years ago. Yeah, it’ll be ten years this November since she passed, and twelve years since that diagnosis hit in July.

A whole decade has gone by, yet my thoughts haven't shifted one bit... plus I've picked up plenty of heavy realizations along the way...

I really hope you find more peace than I have. I’m still searching for that stillness I need, and honestly, a huge part of that is because the system hasn't changed a damn thing.
We still don't have proper palliative care or hospices here. As a society, we completely failed. I just can't find peace.

That’s the most tragic part. Unfortunately, nobody gives a second thought to this until they grow old or someone close to them gets sick. I’m terrified this country will never actually reach a level where it truly cares for its vulnerable and elderly citizens, even when they—or we—eventually become the majority.

Just ask your primary care doctor about getting a home health nurse... you have that right. Your doctor will know exactly what needs to happen.

Can Dad swallow anything on his own? Usually, oncology patients are prescribed Prosure—it’s a nutritional supplement you drink through a straw. A doctor can prescribe it, otherwise, you'll be paying out of pocket.
I don't know if Dad is mobile, but things like adult diapers and all that... ask your GP for those too. They can write you the necessary paperwork.

Just saying this for empathy, because I get it. They sent my Dad home to die, too. He has a brain tumor and now he's just silent and immobile... from day one, they basically wrote him off.

Sadly, my mom is disabled, and since I'm still a student living in a rental, we had to put him in a care facility. If you have any chance of finding a good facility nearby, really think about it. Caring for someone in that state... it isn't easy.
Our family judged us so hard because people look at nursing homes as "places to go die," and now they're judging my mom because she doesn't want to be the sole caregiver for her husband.

It's hard to even describe how much that disgusts me. There aren't enough words in the dictionary...

Dealing with my father's illness is what made me grow up. I learned everything there is to know about how cruel life can be. I met the absolute worst kinds of people... and the most wonderful ones, too.
From being perfectly healthy, cheerful, and active, he turned into a silent, immobile skeleton in just two months.

Sending you so much strength. Please, keep writing to us.

Thank you for everything. Dad passed away on Thursday. Once the shock and the grief subside, I'm going to start digging into what actually happened at the hospital. It’s unbelievable to me... how a man who was walking and functioning normally went from that to being immobile and on a feeding tube in just eight days. People were dropping like flies on that ward, and the registrar told me they couldn't even keep up with the death certificates. It's horrific.

Mark Ruiz4, I'm sending you all the strength and courage in the world.
They’re planning to discharge Dad because they've basically given up on him. Liver necrosis...
We started looking into how to borrow a hospital bed, trying to figure out what kind of coverage we can get through Medicare. Any info or shared experiences would be huge right now—even just knowing if this is actually doable, since Mom and Dad don't live in a major city. She’s dead set on not letting him die somewhere else, but I’m honestly not sure if it’s even possible to care for someone alone when he’s currently stuck in the hospital on IV fluids and transfusions. How do you even handle feeding someone in that state?...
The doctor wouldn't even give us a straight answer on how much time he has left. Honestly, I'm just stunned by how completely devoid of empathy everyone is here... from the nurses all the way up to the doctors.
The military specialist is giving the oncologist the rundown. A liver surgery is on the table, provided the scarring isn't too widespread and the tumor is sitting in one specific spot.
Even that spinal metastasis could be handled with radiation therapy.
Mercury has an incredible transplant team, which is why they get all the praise.
The Mayo Clinic is a major medical center with top-tier resources, so in that regard, it’s a solid choice for oncology treatment.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully, I'll be a bit sharper tomorrow.
Angela Wright said:Try to get to the doctor right when they’re feeling worn out and demand thorough information.
An oncologist usually steps in once the patient is stable enough to actually handle starting treatment.
Head over to the Mayo Clinic.

I'm traveling tomorrow to talk to the doctor. Mom found out today that it's likely a primary liver tumor, and they're basically just playing it by ear now because things have progressed. They were planning a colonoscopy and an endoscopy, but he's too weak for those right now. He's already got heart issues, and now they're trying to stabilize him with transfusions because he's probably bleeding from the tumor. At least, that's my guess... honestly, with his age, it feels like they've practically written him off. I don't know why they stopped mentioning the MRI. There isn't any pain, but he went from being completely independent to needing diapers within two days of being in the hospital, which is a lot for him to swallow. Visiting is banned because of the flu, and I'm worried his mental state might actually break him physically before the tumor does.
I've been frantically Googling, and it seems like drugs can sometimes shrink a tumor down to a size where surgery becomes an option. From what I read, everyone raves about the team at Mercury. So, who do we go to? Mayo Clinic?
Who even handles the referrals for further hospital care—is it the people he's with now or his primary care doctor? So many questions, and today they basically brushed Mom off when she tried to get consultations. She was exhausted, so they finally showed some pity, but even then, it wasn't the actual doctor overseeing Dad's care.

I need some help figuring out the VAT situation when I'm importing from a non-US country and then shipping directly to a US state. I pay the VAT at the point of import, but then my outbound invoice doesn't show any tax... How exactly am I supposed to book this and handle the VAT math within Synesis?
I've got a client breathing down my neck for a quote, so I'm begging for a quick answer here...🎉
Sorry I didn't search the forums first or have the patience to dig through everything... I really need some help here. My Dad has been stuck in this local hospital for seven days now with a liver tumor diagnosis and what looks like metastases in his spine. His condition has just tanked since he was admitted. They won't let him move around, he isn't eating, and he’s just incredibly depressed because nobody seems to have any patience for a 76-year-old man who’s a bit slower after surviving two mild strokes...

What I’m trying to figure out is, at what point does an oncologist actually enter the picture? When does the actual tumor treatment start?

The doctors at this current facility don't have one on staff, so I want to get him transferred somewhere in Washington, D.C. (any suggestions where?)
It's impossible to catch a doctor or even get a straight answer about anything...

It’s all automatic. Even supplemental coverage drops off once the "kid" hits 18... everything just flows through the system.👍

Jack Young said:I totally believe you. Back in December 2015, I had the exact same thing happen. The person at the NOAA office on Smith Street told me the same thing, but... well, I decided to swing by the Medicare office on Lincoln Avenue instead. The gentleman there told me, "No, you don't need to worry about that, it'll update automatically in five or six days." And sure enough, I checked later, and he was right. It's like that sometimes—the folks at NOAA think one thing is required, but they aren't quite up to speed on how the systems talk to each other, so they give people the wrong info.

You're spot on, Jack Young. I checked and everything went through perfectly. Thanks, you saved me a massive headache 🎉

Jack Young said:Just fill out Form 1040 (the termination notice). If you're knocking this out today, just use June 1st, 2016, as the date.

If you haven't officially filed the paperwork to start the business for tax purposes, you'll likely need to complete Form 11P first.

Fill out a Form 1040 for each worker and set the filing date to June 2nd, 2016. You won't need to visit Medicare; it’ll all be handled automatically.

You can pretty much wrap all of this up today.

Thanks, I went ahead and handled all that, but apparently, I still need to report my second job to Medicare within the next couple of days. I was planning on getting it sorted the day before yesterday, but the lovely lady over at NOAA gave me a heads-up... turns out I need my registration from the Chamber of Commerce and the Census Bureau, and I didn't have those papers on me...
Just so you know, since we're talking part-time hours here... I actually managed to pull off the paperwork. Successfully unsubscribed from everything effective May 31st and got the new registration set for June 1st... easy enough, I guess...

Hey everyone,
I need some advice: I've got two employees who need to quit one company and start working for another one. They’re both signing on for permanent positions, just working one hour a day. The second company doesn't have any employees on the books yet. Since there are only two of us, we don't have access to the online portal... so everything has to be done manually. I'm assuming since it's only an hour a day, I can wrap all this up in a single day. What paperwork do I actually need to bring to Medicare, and is there anything I need to handle with the IRS? Also, one employee already has a dependent listed on their file. How does that work with the transition?

Has anyone dealt with in-person paperwork at Medicare lately? It’s just the two of us trying to adjust our hours, but there isn't a single form available online... no instructions, no list of what we actually need to bring... nothing. Just total radio silence...
