Frustrated about being left out of the inheritance

It sounds like a dream scenario, right? Except for one tiny detail: he also inherited a massive mortgage that’s barely even started being paid down. On top of that, there are utility bills piling up—water, electricity, you name it—running into thousands of dollars. What started as a shocking surprise quickly turned into a harsh reality check.
Once he realized exactly what kind of mess both of them had stepped into, he found himself cursing his luck for ever accepting the inheritance in the first place.
It just goes to show, doesn't it? Sometimes an inheritance is nothing more than a heavy burden rather than a gift.
If you realize the deceased was carrying debt, why wouldn't you simply renounce the inheritance? If you decline, the debt doesn't follow you; you just settle things by selling the property. When you're dealing with the funeral home or the bank after someone passes, they ask about outstanding loans right away. I don't see the issue here, unless one is simply too uninformed to make the right choice.
