The personality of a smoker in Psychology ·
I want to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to offer such constructive feedback. I actually had the opportunity to sit down for about half an hour with someone who possesses a wealth of expertise in this area, and through our conversation, I was able to get clarity on all the questions that were weighing on my mind.

Best regards,

Yes, it explicitly states there is a heightened sense of intolerance toward smokers and a general air of offensiveness regarding the subject.

I wasn't actually asking whether lighting up a cigarette in the passenger seat while driving is an issue.
The question was laid out quite clearly in the opening post.

I'm more interested in how various schools of psychology would interpret this specific behavior.

This isn't actually about my personal opinion. I previously mentioned that smokers don't bother me, and my point was backed up by what I read in an older edition of a book on addiction—I believe it was from the late 80s. To be perfectly honest, I can't recall the specific author because I was just flipping through the pages at the local library before sliding it back onto the shelf. My intention here isn't to discriminate against anyone; rather, I am simply trying to dig deeper into the mechanics of addiction, set aside everyone else's biases, and figure out how much truth there really is to the matter. From where I stand, I suspect the actual numbers are quite low.

Quinn:
Are you suggesting that this is simply a direct consequence of smoking?
Honestly, I was just sitting here waiting for someone to finally grasp the core argument of my post.🙂

The discussion isn't about the habit itself, but rather about temperament—identifying which personality types are more predisposed toward it and why certain traits seem to align with smokers while others don't. Is there truly a distinct set of characteristics that defines the "smoker" archetype exclusively?

I am not arguing that picking up a cigarette fundamentally reshapes a person's character; quite the opposite. My point is whether specific, pre-existing personality traits are what actually drive an individual to become a smoker in the first place.

I’m strictly referring to the tobacco itself

There seems to be two competing theories floating around regarding the psychology of smokers. One school of thought suggests they might lean toward impulsive behavior, sudden outbursts of aggression, or a certain stubborn intolerance. On the other hand, some argue that smokers tend to be exceptionally open and gregarious, possessing a natural warmth and a genuine love for social gatherings. Regardless of which side of the psychological coin you land on, there is a common thread that binds them all: a palpable friction with non-smokers, often manifesting as deep offense when they are told they can't light up inside someone’s home or in specific public spaces.
We also tend to categorize these individuals into distinct groups—the daily ritualists who smoke every single day, and the recreational types who only pick up a cigarette during weekend outings or late-night parties.
I find myself wondering how much weight these observations actually carry. Is there a legitimate correlation between smoking and these specific personality traits, or are we simply guilty of throwing everyone into the same bucket through sweeping generalizations? Furthermore, does a meaningful distinction truly exist between the heavy daily smoker and the occasional social smoker, or is the reality much simpler—it's either a habit you have, or it isn't?

I recently finished a book focused on the mechanics of addiction, which laid out these exact perspectives.

For my part, I don't smoke, nor do I harbor any particular grievance against those who do.

Let the debate begin.😁😁😁
