I was watching some old highlights last night—nothing major, just some classic games from a decade or two ago—and it hit me how much the conversation around sports has shifted. It feels like we’ve moved away from celebrating the "unit" and toward a relentless, almost exhausting obsession with the singular superstar.

Don't get me wrong, I love a generational talent. There is something magical about watching a player who seems to operate on a different plane of existence than everyone else on the field. You tune in specifically because you know they might do something impossible. But lately, I feel like the narrative of every single matchup, every single series, and every single season is being sucked into this vacuum of "What is [Star Player] doing?" It’s as if the other twenty players on the field are just background actors in a biopic about one person.

I remember being a kid and following my local team. We talked about the chemistry of the infield, the way the pitcher and catcher worked together, or how the bullpen held a lead. It was about the collective struggle. Now, if you go on any major sports forum or look at the trending tabs on social media, 90% of the discourse is hyper-focused on the health, the stats, or the "vibes" of one specific individual. If that one person is having a rough week, the whole team is treated like it's collapsing. If they have a good day, the team is suddenly "back." It creates this weird, volatile emotional rollercoaster for fans that feels less like supporting a club and more like following a celebrity.

This obsession also feels like it’s driven by the way news is consumed now. We want the quick hit. We want the "update" on the guy we care about so we can react instantly. It’s become a bit of a cycle: a series starts, everyone waits for the inevitable news regarding the marquee name, and the actual tactical nuances of the game get buried under the weight of individual speculation. It feels like we're losing the ability to appreciate the "grind"—the unglamorous work that actually wins championships.

I've noticed this in my own viewing habits, too. I'll find myself scrolling through news feeds looking for updates on a specific player's status or performance, and before I know it, I haven't even thought about how the rest of the roster is performing. It’s a bit of a psychological trap. We tie our investment to a single person because it's easier to track and easier to care about than the complex, shifting dynamics of a whole roster. But in doing so, are we actually diminishing the sport?

I wonder if this is just the "modern era" of fandom, where everything is personalized and centered on the individual, or if we are actually doing a disservice to the players who aren't in the spotlight. The "glue guys"—the ones who do the dirty work, the ones who make the winning plays that don't show up in a highlight reel—they're getting lost in the noise.

I’m curious to hear what you guys think. Do you find yourself following the "star" narrative more than the team narrative these days? Does the hyper-focus on individual player updates make the game more exciting for you, or do you feel like it cheapens the team aspect of the sport?

I figured it was time to put this out there and try to find some new friends. My social circle has pretty much fallen apart over the last few years; things just drifted away with people. Some guys got married and suddenly don't have a spare second for a quick drink—you know how it goes, life gets consumed by the wife, kids, and family obligations—and others just packed up and moved across the country for better opportunities in different states...
By way of introduction, I’m 39, living over in King County, and since I have my own car, I don't mind hopping on the road if I need to head down south for something. I’m not a drinker (only on extremely rare occasions), I don't smoke and have zero intention of starting, and I value being a decent, honest person who doesn't play games. I'm about 5'9"...
That’s the gist of it for now. We can dive into the rest via DM or whatever messaging app you prefer, assuming you actually have the time and interest to get to know someone new..

Hey everyone..
I figured I’d put this post together to find a new friend or two. My social circle has basically completely fallen apart over the last three or four years. Some friendships just hit a dead end—either people got married and suddenly don't have any bandwidth left for even a quick drink (you know how it is, wives, kids, family life comes first), or they packed up and moved out of the US entirely to chase better opportunities elsewhere...
To give you the basics: I'm 38, based in Knox County, and I've got my own car, so getting around isn't an issue. Whether it's a weekend road trip, hitting the coast, or heading up toward Mount Rainier, I'm down for anything as long as we're moving. I don't drink alcohol, except for the occasional Jack Daniel's or Jagermeister in special circumstances; beer and wine aren't really my thing. I don't smoke and have no intention of starting, I'm not crude, and I value honesty—no lying or cheating here. I'm about 5'9"...

Oh, one more thing—it would be great if you also knew a female friend for my buddy (he's 39). It would be cool if he could meet someone too, though he's popped into threads here a few times himself...
How to set a macOS shutdown timer? in Software ·
So, after wading through about 50 different shutdown utilities and putting them all to the test, I finally stumbled onto something useful. It turns out you can actually use the Shutdown Timer to set it up so the computer kills itself automatically once a specific process wraps up...
Thanks, everyone...

I’m honestly lost on what you guys are even saying here. I think I’ll just head over to Google and see if I can figure out how to pull this off using a batch file instead...

Alternatively, if anyone could just whip up an example for something like Google Docs and drop it in here, I’d really appreciate the help...

Thanks,

I'm already aware of those keyboard shortcuts, but that’s not really what I’m after here. What I actually need is some kind of software—or something along those lines—that can just automate the whole process for me...
How to set a macOS shutdown timer? in Software ·
Is there a way to set things up so that when I’m working—say, typing something up in Google Docs and then closing out, or just browsing the web on Chrome and shutting the window—the whole system just shuts down automatically? Like, once the apps are gone, the computer follows suit?
Is there a specific app for this kind of thing, or maybe a setting I can tweak to make it happen?

thx..

As for me, I’m 37 (turning 38 soon). I live out in the Midwest, and since I have my own car, getting around isn't an issue. I'm always down for a road trip, especially during these summer months—hitting the coast or heading into the mountains for a weekend getaway sounds perfect to me. I don't really drink alcohol; if I do, it’s strictly the occasional Jack Daniel's or Jagermeister, but I stay far away from beer or wine. I’m looking for a woman, ideally somewhere in her late 20s or early 30s, living in the Washington, D.C. area or nearby. I'd love to get to know someone through messaging—maybe WhatsApp or just texting at first—and if we hit it off, see where things go in person. To give you an idea of who I am: I’m 35, living locally, and my life is pretty much settled. I don't have any "baggage" from the past—no exes hanging around, no kids, no drama from jealous former partners. I don't smoke, I rarely touch alcohol unless it’s a special occasion, and I'm easy to talk to; I actually value conversation, so as long as we aren't sitting in silence, we'll be fine. I'm about 5'9", established in my career, and generally have my act together.

If this sounds like your speed, don't be shy about reaching out. I promise I don't bite... much.

I’m looking for a single woman, roughly between 25 and 35, ideally living in the Washington, D.C. area or somewhere nearby. I’d love to get to know someone—starting out through text, Viber, or WhatsApp, and then seeing where things go naturally, maybe even meeting up in person down the road. To give you a little background on me: I’m 35, also based near D.C., and I consider my life pretty well-settled. I don't have any lingering baggage from past relationships—no exes hanging around, no kids, none of that jealous drama. I’m a non-smoker, I don't really drink (unless it’s a truly special occasion), and I’m easy to talk to. I actually value conversation; as long as we aren't sitting there in total silence, I can talk about just about anything. I’m about 5'9", employed, financially stable, and generally have my act together.

If this sounds like it might be a match, don't be shy about reaching out. I promise I don't bite (too much)...
