Honestly, I don't think they care about any of that history anymore. It's all about the cash now. The economy in Spain is tanking—the government is basically doing nothing except driving the youth out of the country. Unemployment is sitting around 21%, which is a total disaster, so they're just sending everyone abroad to find work. Obviously, there's going to be a breaking point.
It’s like a family where the dad spends his whole paycheck on booze instead of feeding his wife and kids. Eventually, the wife is gonna kick him to the curb and take the kids with her, and the kids will be totally embarrassed by him. All those early years and "perfect" memories? Gone. Damn, you gotta actually put in the work to keep things together; nothing stays perfect forever.

The Constitution says all kinds of nonsense—honestly, what people actually want matters way more than some piece of paper. Every regime tries to lock itself in using all sorts of loopholes, but if someone's truly ready to walk, you can't stop them unless you resort to war or straight-up oppression... and once you go down that road, it's game over.

velvetmaker3 said:That’s just not how it works. These kinds of decisions have massive, long-term consequences, and you can't just make them recklessly or without thinking things through properly.
We honestly have no idea what the Catalans actually want.

That’s exactly why we need a referendum to put everything out there in black and white. Honestly, based on how the folks in Washington, D.C. are acting, it feels like they know damn well what Californians want—their reaction speaks louder than anything else.

I see how the North let the South break away

And you think this isn't still a massive issue? You're dead wrong if you think otherwise. That whole Southern identity thing is passed down through generations—it hasn't just vanished into thin air.

Larry Fox5 said:It’s really not that black and white, though—just look at the Basque Country in Spain. After 50 years of ETA, with over 800 lives lost, we're seeing they finally laid down their arms and settled for a level of autonomy that works for them... mostly because there isn't enough support left to push for more.

Then you've got Ireland, which is another similar case. This current momentum in California doesn't even come close to the level of "statehood" we saw in Northern Ireland or the Basque Country over the last 50 years of European history.

Sure, but they had to resort to bombs just to get that autonomy. They couldn't get it any other way. And honestly, if Spain keeps sticking to this economic path, it wouldn't be a shock if the Basque Country ends up following California's lead. Like I said before... a country is basically a marriage between provinces or national lands joined together—and they can split if the majority of those parts actually want out. It’s messy, it sucks, but that's just how it works.
When your wife walks out on you, you just back off and hope she realizes she made a mistake. At worst, you stay on good terms, maybe even better than when you were hitched. Anything else just leads to a total disaster for both sides. And it's not just about California—this stuff is happening all over Europe. Take Italy, for instance—Venice and Lombardy have been pushing back against Rome for ages.

velvetmaker3 and I both feel like California isn't just for the Californians—it belongs to all Americans.

California is the land of the people who actually live there—the majority of that region, or whatever this potential state would be. They should be able to vote in a referendum to decide their own damn future. Plus, we have no clue how many Spaniards living in California actually voted for secession. It’s not some black-and-white issue, but one thing's for sure: you can't force a group of people to stay in an association they don't want to be part of. This push for California to become its own state didn't just pop up overnight—we've seen it coming for years. Honestly, the US will be lucky if this doesn't turn into a full-blown civil war.

velvetmaker3 said:The thing is, you can't just hijack a passing political moment to tear apart a state that has such deep-rooted traditions.
It feels like today, people just want to hold a referendum and walk away because it's convenient. It doesn't work like that; even a tiny local municipality can't just break off that easily, let alone something on this scale.

Another point is that while there might be instances of ongoing oppression against certain groups, Californians aren't victims in a way that requires independence just to survive.

I don't buy that Californians are stupid or clueless about what they want. Besides—if they change their minds about being independent, they can always just crawl back to the old union, right?

velvetmaker3 said:Do you really think I'm happy with the government's policies?
Nobody is satisfied, but that's hardly a reason to secede from the US.
Look at how California handles things; instead of actually enjoying what they have, they just seem to go looking for trouble.

A people's right to self-determination should never be taken away. Any attempt to fight that usually just ends in war—period. No matter what else is going on, history shows that's how it plays out.

velvetmaker3 said:Don't blow things out of proportion. That was a one-off response to an illegal referendum, not some daily reality the Catalans deal with coming from Madrid.

Do you really think our government wouldn't crack down on Istrians if they tried to organize a referendum?

Or would France let the Bretons get away with it?

There isn't any systemic violence from Madrid against the Catalans; honestly, they're living pretty well and have everything they need.

Well, they could easily come down hard on folks in Florida too, and then we'd be looking at a real Pandora's box—which is already cracking open thanks to this anti-nationalist nonsense from the current administration. People here aren't exactly feeling much love for Washington, D.C. anyway, so this move would just fuel the fire. I don't even get what the goal is. It definitely isn't helping any true American.

velvetmaker3 said:Another mistake. Catalans are Spaniards too. Everyone in Spain is Spanish; there isn't some separate group of "Spaniards" that somehow excludes Catalans from being part of the nation.

We don't actually know what the Catalans want. Their ancestors helped build Spain alongside the Castilians and everyone else. It wasn't an occupation.

And that will all come out in the referendum. Messing with the vote and using force just makes everything ten times worse. Honestly, I don't get why anyone is terrified of a secession vote if they're actually confident that nothing will change. If things are really fine the way they are, the people will just vote to stay part of the current system and call it a day.

Matthew Cruz11 said:I disagree. A nation isn't a marriage, and it certainly doesn't operate under those same emotional principles. If things worked exactly the way you're suggesting, the entire country would disintegrate overnight—just look at what happened in the Basque Country or Galicia.

Actually, a country *is* a lot like a marriage. It’s about certain states coming together to form one unit. In this specific case, the issue is that Catalans and Spaniards are basically different people—mostly because of the language barrier.
The US is also made up of various states joined into one big entity. And honestly, every region should have the right to its own freedom if the majority there decides they want it. That goes for Germany, France, the United Kingdom, or pretty much any country out there. Trying to force people to obey against their will always ends badly—always. Once blood starts spilling, there's usually no turning back.
So, whether you're talking about a marriage or a federal union, you've gotta work on the relationship and make sure everyone's doing okay so you don't end up with a divorce or secession. You can't just take anything for granted in life.

Quincy:
I don't even know where to start with this—just absolute nonsense. Honestly, what are we even doing here? It’s like nobody's actually thinking. kaže:
Look, you can't just declare independence with 37.8% of the vote. Like, sure—you can try—but nothing actually happens. You won't get any traction at home, and you definitely won't get any respect on the world stage. It’s a non-starter.

Washington, D.C. definitely went overboard with the heavy-handedness here—total overkill. But honestly, Puigdemont is the one really driving this whole circus and cranking up the tension for no reason. Instead of actually sitting down with D.C. to talk autonomy—especially when it comes to the money side of things—he’s just out there making these insane threats about breaking away. It's exhausting.
Look, it’s just like a bad breakup—if someone is already halfway out the door, trying to force them to stay through pressure or intimidation is the absolute worst move you can make. Trying to muscle people into staying during a referendum always backfires. The government in Washington, D.C. basically shot themselves in the foot with that stunt yesterday.
