Why do we feel the need to hide our emotions?
in Psychology ·
It would be frankly absurd to expect everyone to wear their heart on their sleeve at all times—it just isn't realistic. Personally, I make a point of keeping my emotions in check when the situation calls for it; think professional settings or casual gatherings with acquaintances who aren't exactly my inner circle. However, once I am home with my family or being myself with my partner, I give 100% and express how I feel without reservation—anything else would feel performative and, quite frankly, unfair.
On the other hand, there are certain individuals who maintain a wall even around those closest to them. You never truly see an authentic emotion from them—be it joy or frustration—and that is honestly quite a shame.
